what do you reckon? I have a few friends that are christian and vegetarian and at my C.U at school the other week one of the teachers overheard us talking about it and expressed some views that he thought they were wrong and silly and that its not right.

we're all entitled to our opinion but what do you reckon? Is there anything in the Bible specifically about it?

I eat meat, man i love roasts, God gave us animals right? But i also see where they're coming from and i respct their views.

so?

They are vegans because they are so unable to hear the gut wrenching cries of the plants as they heartlessly decapitate, mutilate, and purolate them!!!!

Oh God! Who will finally speak for the plants?! Who? Ahhhhh...............Who?!!!!

Biblically, God gave us plants only in the Garden of Eden. Then after the Flood He also gave us animals to eat. Then with Moses He gave the 'kosher' rules.

New Testement-wise, we are told to take proper care of our bodies; that while nothing is unholy to eat, we are to not offend our brothers; that we are free from kosher laws.

I think it's a matter of personal choice - if a person thinks it's healthier to be vegetarian, then they should go for it. But it isn't one of the marks of Christianity, or at odds with it either.

(I also enjoy meats, but am cutting back some as a means of weight control.)

Paul tells Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:1-5:

"But the Spirit saith expressly, that in later times some shall fall away from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons, through the hypocrisy of men that speak lies, branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron; forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by them that believe and know the truth.

For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it be received with thanksgiving: for it is sanctified through the word of God and prayer."

I think this is pretty straight-forward about Pauls position on vegeterianism if its done on the basis of acceptance by God.

If vegeterianism is engaged in for non-religious reasons, such as animal rights or health-related issues, I believe you are ok.

I have pursed my lips as tightly as is humanly possible in our enjoined veneration of the Lemon! :)

Matt 15:11-20
11 Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man." 12 Then His disciples came and said to Him, "Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?" 13 But He answered and said, "Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. 14 Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch." 15 Then Peter answered and said to Him, "Explain this parable to us." 16 So Jesus said, "Are you also still without understanding? 17 Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated? 18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. 20 These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man."

Hmmm . Offhand , the only command that I remember concerning one must eat meat is in the commands for observing the Passover . If that command is ignored , I suppose that one could ignore any other command to refrain from meat . However , Paul does suggest that one can eat only vegetables and Daniel ( for a time ) ate only plants ( I think ) . Daniel may have only refrained from meats done a certain way .

There are health reasons for not eating pork, shellfish, catfish and other unclean meats. God created those animals to be the vacuum cleaners for the world, eating trash and not releasing toxins back into their environment. And God declared plenty of wonderful meats to be good for us. At one point when they were being purified, Aaron and his sons ate only beef and wine! Now that's Atkins carried to a whole new level.

As for not eating meat so as to lose weight, protein is far less likely than carbs to turn to fat.

Huh?
Did you misunderstand me, or did you quote me by accident? Because I don't see how what you said was directly related to what I said. So I guess that leaves the third option of me misunderstnading you...
Please enlighten.

I know Adkins is popular nowadays, but check the Pritikin diet. Our bodies do great with meat only 2-3 times a week. That's why you always hear "more whole grains, more fresh fruits and vegetables."

But anyhow, the point is that whichever diet a person chooses for themself is their choice, and (unless it's cannibalism, or taken to extremes of damaging your body) is morally neutral.

Am I the only veggie around here?

Sure, nowhere in the Bible does it say: "Don't eat meat." It says we can.

The Bible also says men can have many wives, but that is not something I would go in for. I'm not saying it is wrong, I just wouldn't feel comfortable with it.

See my point? Eating meat is an ethical issue, a personal issue, outside the realm of the Bible. Sometimes you have to look beyond scripture and see what you truly feel.

If you think that you should stop eating meat - then do. If you dont't, by all means continue - I have no problem with it!

Ha ha ha - when my husband went on a low fat, low cholestrol diet he lost about 25 pounds which I promptly put on with the same food. The metabolism of our bodies is different for each of us. I feel better and lose weight with more protein. You obviously don't.

I agree that it's a morally as well as theologically neutral issue. :)

I think it is personal choice. I know a few vegans ....I would die of starvation as I love the meat god has provided for us...but to each his own.

However we run a missions school, as of yet any vegetarian who comes here ends up eatign meat before they leave. mostly out of curisity, to see what elk taste like but alos on outreach where you eat the food you are given, so you dont offend anyone.

One girls was a forved vegetarian (her body can not digest protien and some other foods) She could not eat meat, dairy, certain grains etc. She hated it and at times would take a tiny taste of what the rest of us were eating. Once when we were in Africa we had chance to eat some exotic meats. We all agreed Black Sabel Antelope and Giraffe were the best meats we had ever tasted...the temptaion was to great for my involenaty vegetarian friend so she tried some, just bite but our team leader was a bit upset with both of us as of the health risks for her (and I was the one who gave her the meat) she lived, and she may have never tasted beef or chicken before but she has had a bite of giraffe!!!!

i dont reject my bible or not read it, i said i found it hard to read, by that i mean i only read a chapter (sometimes less) a day and i meditate and pray on that. I know many people who read much more but i prefer smaller bits so i can get more out of it. When i first became a christian i was very naive about the bible and slow in reading it, so i still do not know much.

Romans 14:1-4
1 Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters. 2 One man's faith allows him to eat everything, but another man, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. 3 The man who eats everything must not look down on him who does not, and the man who does not eat everything must not condemn the man who does, for God has accepted him. 4 Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

Yeah, but have you been to a fish farm? Those catfish eat solid cubes consisting of plants protiens!

Every been to one of the numorous hog farms in the panhandle of Texas. They live on concrete slab which is sprayed daily and feed high protein feed.

In nature these animal are 'cleaners', but when grown commericaly they are pretty clean.
