It's less than a month away, and what fun it would be to send an anonymous gift to a lonely widow, a student who will be away from home for the first time this year, a newly divorced or widowed church member, or perhaps someone new in town who doesn't know anyone.

And of course, loved ones who live far away.

If you could send a care package to someone you love, what would you put in it?

My son's friend Janelle has just moved to Calgary. I found out through the Christmas season that she really likes bubble bath stuff, so I'm putting together a care package to send her for Valentine's Day. Mind you, it won't be anonymous, but I'm sure she'll be surprised and delighted. :D

a friend of mine has a husband who is incarcerated. I just asked my husband last night if we could buy him a book and send it. I might ask my friend to help us select the book. Then I would like to surprise her with a gift from us. Not sure what though. She's living all alone. She's a wonderful, loving woman. I told my husband that I would rather send loving gifts to them than to spend any money on ourselves.

Not to change the subject from the post, but I'm not sure you're permitted to send books to jail. My SIL's SIL, was in jail and she attempted to send her a Max Lucado book and it was sent back to her. She had to wait until she was released until she could give it to her.

Great idea for a post. I love the idea of blessing someone anonomously. I'm going to give this some thought and see what I can do for some elderly neighbors.

That's very strange. Well, I'm not sure if it changes things, but this man is in prison serving a longer sentence than the typical short term jail time. Also, I was planning to send the book directly from the church bookstore to the address his wife would provide me (the lady who runs our bookstore said that this is a good way of ensuring a book would get to them, since stuff sent directly from churches tends to make it through faster. But all packages are opened and scrutinized to a certain extent). I think you can send things like this to people who are incarcerated, although they can only have a limited number of books at any one time. Some books are disapproved, I have heard, on the basis of having some violent or sexual content. But a max lucado book should have been kosher. I suppose the rules vary from institution to institution. I will have to ask his wife. Thanks for the tip.

Sometimes if you're not allowed to send books, the prison will still allow you to talk with the prison chaplain, and you can donate money for him to order the book from an approved vendor. That may be another way you can send it.

Thank you for the suggestion. I'm going to call my friend soon so that I have time to figure out the best way of getting a book or other edifying gift to him. He is a Christian so I think he'd like it.

You're welcome. It was just one way we could send books when I was working with a prison ministry a couple of years ago. We used to donate books and it's just one way to do this. Another is to donate to the library; it isn't the same as a care package, but at least you can get the book in the person's hands. But call the facility; each one has different rules.

When we worked with juveniles it was much easier, though. Then we could send packages if we wanted, but only to certain facilities.

Now that you mention it...this is a great idea. I should ask my church if we can start something like this. Thanks for the idea.

Awesome! I'm glad to help. I am finding inspiration here too. Time to step out in faith.

God blessed me through my efforts to help my friend as a Valentines Day present. I called her tonight to tell her my ideas, and she ended up being very encouraged by it. She said that she has prayed a lot lately for good people to be in her life. And so it really encouraged me that I am listening to God! It was such a joy to hear her praise God. This is what it's all about!

I was getting a photo of my granny and I framed for Christmas, but it wasn't ready in time, so I was planning to bring it to her for valentines day instead.

That's a nice idea! I should do something special for my grammy too. She always sends me a card every year!
