  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This question is alot tougher than it might seem, because no matter which direction you go, there is alot of room for error.

For starters, the "sappy" gift connundrum. A heart shaped box of chocolates might come off as sappy, but it's also a completely unoriginal, uninspired, cookie-cutter type gift. If I were a girl and I received a heart shaped box of chocolates for V-day, my first thought would be, "Gee, thanks, I feel really special....just like the 50 million other girls who got one of these today."

IMHO, a "sappy" gift is about as useful as a bag of rubber hammers if it fails to make the girl feel sappy. And if it doesn't, because she's a nice girl, she'll probably tell you it was "a nice thought" to spare your feelings.

"It's the thought that counts" = "You blew it, buddy."

I think if you can look past the commercialized aspect of this holiday, it presents an opportunity, (through the gift giving), to put your relationship to the acid test to see how well you know/are intimate/in tune with your partner. That's why I believe that a well chosen practical gift can have just as equal or the same "effect" as a well chosen sappy one.

Practical. I'm a guy. A sarcastic, cynical guy. A sarcastic, cynical, ENGLISH guy.

However, I'd like it to also be thoughtful. Something that shows that she knows be and demonstrates how she feels about be.

Send this man a bucket of steaks.

I voted for the third option. I don't know. I'm a realistic romantic. I like something that's romantic, but not SAPPY romantic. Chocolates, stuffed animals, etc. do nothing for me. I'd love flowers, however, even if they were just picked off the side of the road...a dozen red roses is a little too sappy for my taste.

I'd say most of the time I'd prefer something more practical...something that would somehow be useful, if only for entertainment. But something that communicates that he put thought into it and chose it because it's something he knew would fit my personality and interests.

sappy.

And my girlfriend won't be getting jewelry or chocolates and the flowers will be incidental. Though I've come up with a new idea which unfortunately probably falls square into the sappy category.

okay i'm curious, can i ask what you're getting her?

of course not!

*hides her night vision goggles, and surveillance equipment*

your secret is safe with me :D
Hmmm OK,

We had a big discussion earlier this week which involved talking about what our love languages were at one point, though she was guessing because she hadn't read the book so that's what I got her. I'm thinking of putting in a letter trying to tell her I love her in each of the languages. Words of affirmation is easy but I'll have to get a little creative with the others. Quality time I'll put the date and time I'm picking her up for the date. Physical touch a cut out coupon redeemable for one big hug. etc.

There's another gift as well which will be on the practical side.

Personally, heart-shaped box or not, I would think, "YES! CHOCOLATE!" Don't get me wrong, I love nothing more than creativity, but originality is not a factor in the case of chocolate. Why, you ask? Because it's CHOCOLATE! Nothing can surpass its sugary goodness save the very kiss of my beloved. Or something sappy and dramatic like that.

In fact, I'd even go as far to put chocolate in the "practical" category. I mean, since when do flowers satisfy cravings?
