Oh 8.1 sucks, make no mistake. But it's not so terrible to merit the risk of something even worse. Frankly I wish I could go back to 7.
Don't risk it. Enough people complain about broken Windows 10 update to make it a big risk. You can't go back to 7, its sale will end soon. Use 8.1 to its last breadth and then either buy a Win10 device or install Linux (Mint or Ubuntu).

There is no risk. Image your drive and you can return to it in under an hour.

AISI, the only risk is if you like 10 and get sucked into MS's subscriber model.

You don't have a 7 license for that machine?

Newer OS APIs and kernel (which can mean improvements in stability for applications and hardware), return of the Start menu (in a way*), longer amount of time until end of support. May or may not actually handle some pieces of hardware better...owing to the under-the-hood stuff mentioned earlier.

*and pretty much completely moot in either 8.1 or 10 if you just install Classic Shell.

I bought a Quantum Byte back at the beginning of October, and since I had nothing to lose on the device, I went ahead and did the upgrade before doing anything else. Be prepared to let it spend an afternoon upgrading, though (although that *could* just be because the Atom processor in the Quantum Byte is what it is - a low power CPU meant for embedded usage). Post-upgrade, there is an option to revert back to the previous version of Windows, but after a month the old installation will be cleared out.

Can, but won't. Not compared to Win 7 anyway. I'd bet a month's pay on that.

return of the Start menu (in a way*),
Which I already have thx for classic shell, as you mentioned

longer amount of time until end of support.
LOL @ "Microsoft support." Talk about an oxymoron

A for effort though.

I do cut Windows 10 down a lot(which it usually deserves), though driver issues on old computers is understandable. Even if it was like the next Windows XP, no spyware, no BS, I still wouldn't recommend it to a customer with a computer from, say, 2005. It's just not in Microsoft's best interest to gear it too much toward older systems. Their bread and butter is in new pre-built systems.

Worked on my first Win10 unit today. Appealing, advanced, polished OS in many ways. But unfortunately it brings out MS's control side in spades. Updates are not (normally) optional or configurable. I went to shut down the machine, and was greeted with a working screen that said, "Getting Windows Ready. Do not shut off your computer". This has been for twenty minutes so far. Thankfully I was not in the field and did not have to take the unit anywhere. And getting ready for WHAT? Zero information. Just trust the boys at Redmond, the same ones who put a keylogger in the beta. They know what's best for you.

It's too bad, because it could have been fantastic, but as it is I won't put it on any machine of mine. MS has had its time bullying the market, and it is drawing to a close.
