  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Jesus says in the gospel that blashpemy against the Holy Spirit is the only unforgiveable sin. What, specifically, is unforgiveable blashpemy against the Holy Spirit?

If you believed for a time in all seriousness that God exists but He is evil or that you would not worship Him, would that constitute this sin? Or if one had believed and said that actions of the Holy Spirit were not real, or from the devil or some evil being?

Why is this sin unforgiveable?

Let Scripture interpret Scripture!

There is another reference to this unforgivable sin here -->

First, here is the Scripture I am assuming you are referencing..

Matthew 12:31-32
Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

Mark 3:27-29
No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house.

Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation.

While Jesus was referring to those who would suffer eternal damnation He said it was becuase they refused to believe on the Holy Spirit!
Mark 16:16
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Romans 14:23
And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

1 Corinthians 11:29
For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

2 Thessalonians 2:12
That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

1 Timothy 5:12
Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.

The Holy Spirit says this about unregenerate man;

John 16:7-16
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you. A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
As you can see by the Holy Scripture, The Holy Spirit comes to convict mankind of sin, righteousness and judgement, ergo, those who refuse to believe Him are in fact in danger of hell fire! For, if they continue in thier unbelief, they will refuse to come to Jesus for Salvation!

And He has much more to say about those who believe, but that is another thread..

Luke 5:20
And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.

Some people say that there is no longer an unforgiveable sin that can be committed, for that sin only applied to those members of the religious establishment that plotted toward the death of Jesus, fully cognizant of the fact that he was the Son of God.

Whatever the unforgiveable may or may not be, there really is something vile about religious leaders that denigrate the faith of their followers towards their own vile personal or political fulfillment.
There is something that verges upon the unforgiveable, for example, in the jihadists who send young naive children to their deaths as suicide bombers, with visions of paradise dancing in their young heads. When the jihadist leaders opt not to share the same fate for themselves, it is fairly obvious that they are using this vile religious belief towards their own ends, rather than actually sharing in it.

Whether they be cult leaders, or charlatans, these religious leaders that blaspheme their own professed faith in such ways are in a very exclusive class of evil doers.
Now one step further onto the road of absolute evil would be the religious leader that actually has full, intimate knowledge of the ways of the Spirit, but still chooses to use his religious prestige to advance what he knows is evil and a slander against his own faith in spite of that knowledge.
Few are the people who possess such intimate knowledge of the Holy Spirit that they could even commit such a sin. Rarer still would be the man that does has such an intimate knowledge of the Spirit, and chooses to act against the Spirit in spite of that intimate knowledge.

The unforgiveable sin is knowing deep inside the real truth, but turning against it and pushing it away. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truht that leads us into all truth. If we continue to resist the truth even when we know the truth, are we not enemies to God, fighting on the side of the devil by choice?
In the book of Hebrews, it speaks of those who have "tasted" the gift of God, which is the Holy Spirit, yet they have trodden over the blood of Jesus sacrificial love, even though they knew just what it was. Those that have a fuller knowledge yet turn against God may have committed the unforgiveable, but if a person can still ask God for forgiveness, I seriously doubt they have committed such a sin, as the only ones that would commit the unforgiveable sin would consciously seek no forgiveness.

Hebrews 6:4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit,
5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come,
6 if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.

People speak against Jesus cos they don't know him, they really just show that they are alienated from God, without the Holy Spirit

People that blame the Holy Spirit are those that know him or at least know of Him as active and real and have no way back once they blame the one who reveals the truth.

Sin is judged by Christ and a matter of one's heart.

The scriptures say that God will reveal the hidden motives and judge our hearts.

Likewise, we all must walk within our own conscious and judge wisely with the scriptures on our heart and love for God first in all that we do.

Murder could be blasphemy if committed to blaspheme the Holy Spirit...as stated the heart will be judged by God and is not always known by man.

God bless.

Funny how, after seeing we're not saved by works, people can actuially go on to think they can be damned by works.. :o

Zeena, I don't believe that anyone is suggesting one is condemned by their works...but we also have to remember that 'faith' without 'works' is dead.

Our works is a reflection of our faith -- which is a reflection of our heart. It is our hearts that God does judge...indeed the scriptures say also our 'words' and 'deeds' will be judged by Christ.

This does not contradict the fact that 'grace' saves, but it does introduce the fact that faith without works is dead...since our works through our faith is a reflection of our hearts and love for God (and in this respect it reflects 'our choice' of good -- of life...or death). Most truly a man condemns himself when he commits blaspheme against the Holy Spirit...not by the act, but by his choice and opposition and 'actual ''possible'' hatred' for God. In this, a person does not choose God and opposes life along side the accuser...satan.

God Bless.

If we are faithless He remains Faithful, for He cannot deny Himself :)

Thanks everyone. It makes more sense to me now. :)

The sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is unforgiveable beacause - "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights...." - James 1:17a
There are some gifts from God which are common to all of humanity and some which are uncommon or special gifts which one must receive in time and will not possess by virtue of a natural birth alone, although they are still achievable upon God's terms. We all have a human or intellectual faith at birth, but saving or pardoning/justifying faith is a more special gift from God which is bestowed upon those who wisely exert their human faith first in order to achieve the later justifying and pardoning faith. If God does not give this special saving faith, then a man or woman can labor for all of eternity and never produce it....It is an imparted gift only. When God does grant this true saving faith, (along with the grace of repentance,) He does so through the Holy Spirit's agency and if that blessed Agent has forever abandoned a person, then that person will never be saved simply because he or she will be left with an unacceptable, human faith and repentance which falls short of that special kind of faith which unites a soul to Christ forever in spiritual marriage and makes them "bone of His bone" throughout all of eternity. The scripture "Grieve not the Holy Spirit..." aught to be taken with gravity and godly fear as it is a much more serious area than many take it to be. Do nothing to offend this third person of the Trinity as His very name is Holy Spirit, thus implying the need for personal holiness if we wish His association. Moses struck a large rock and water gushed out, but if the agent of God were to abandon that large boulder, then a rock must forever remain a rock.
