  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

(Rom.1:8-9) First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. For God is my witness, Whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of His Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers,

In my studies of God's Word, I find no where in Scripture that says we have 'unconfessed sin(s)' ... instead, I find quite the contrary. Man's sins cannot foil God's purpose. God does not go outside of His own will to explain His actions in grace. Let us refer to (Psa.51:7) "Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow." [purge me = Thou wilt sin-cleanse me] i.e., expiate by the blood of a sin offering. No where in Scripture does it say that Christ has to die again and again for our sin(s).
(Rom.4:6-8) Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, saying "Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the LORD will not impute sin."

Wouldn't continual confessions of sins then constitute a work? And where in Scripture does it say that since are sins are covered by Christ's shed blood, that they (our sins) become uncovered?

Beloved friends, being members of the body of Christ ("the church") ... we are NOT to bite and devour one another, NOT to have second-hand faith, NOT to lean on or own or another man's understanding of God's "word of truth", NOT to seek any man's approval...rather I hope and pray that we "study to shew thyself approved unto God" (2Tim.2:15) to walk in Christ (Col.2:6).
If you talk, walk. If you don't walk, don't talk: i.e., if you walk the walk, then talk the talk!!!

Many have been labouring to make a unity of the "body", instead of "endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit." (Eph.4:3-4) "The bond of peace" means the bond which produces peace. The acknowledgement of the spiritual unity of the ONE body, which God has already made in Christ, which we are to endeavour to keep.
(Eph.4:13-15)
Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into Him in all things, Which is the Head, even Christ:

I beseech you, brothers and sisters, to 'HEAR AND BELIEVE' ... trust in and depend completely on the ministry of the Holy Spirit...and even if you do not have full understanding yet...still, 'HEAR AND BELIEVE'. In addition to this post on unconfessed sin, I want you to understand that in no way am I saying that we are given a license to sin. God forbid. I am not an advocate to any saved sinner (saint) that would be blatantly disobedient or rebellious to God's will. That is irreverent and dishonoring to Him.

What I am trying to say is that some sin more than others. And yes! we can tell God that we are sorry, but our prayers shouldn't be filled with only thoughts of ourselves and what we have done. Our prayers should be more in thanks and praise of what he has and does for us and will do for us!

Our sins have been forgiven---PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE.

(Psa.103:12) As far as the east is from the west, so far hath He removed our transgressions from us.
(Jer.31:34) "...for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more."
(Heb.8:12) For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
(Heb.10:12) But this Man after He had offered one sacrifice for sins,
for ever sat down on the right hand of God.

Do we believe God when he says our sin(s) are forgiven? I know I do.

Praise, thanks, and glory to our Omnipotent, Omniscient, and Omnipresent God!!! O, what a glorious day it will be, when we exchange our faith for sight!

Confession ... actually "acknowledgement" restores one's walk. We can grieve the Spirit by our attitude or our actions ... and we know when we do as it is the same kind of grief we might give an earthly loved one if we do something we should not do.

But you are correct in your post foundinHim.

It is interesting to note that all of my sin was 2,000 years in the future of the time in which they were paid for.

In full.

We have access to forgiveness of sins because of Jesus Christ. As John wrote in his first letter, If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing (1 John 1:9). This is why the Catholic Church celebrates the sacrament of reconciliation (penance), because we must continually turn our hearts back to God. Far be it from us to be the people Isaiah prophesied, who draws near with words only and honors [God] with their lips alone, though their hearts are far from [Him] (Isaiah 29:13)!

love scripture.....not my word but my GOD's word
Yes, A Brother in Christ, Jesus has already paid the price of our sins. But we are still charged to ask God for forgiveness. The Lord's Prayer contains a petition that we be forgiven as we forgive others. Matthew's gospel explains it further: if we forgive others, we are forgiven by God, but if we do not forgive others, we are not forgiven (Matthew 6:14-15). Mark 11:25 agrees as well: "When you stand to pray, forgive anyone against whom you have a grievance, so that your heavenly Father may in turn forgive you your transgressions."

Consider Acts 8:9-24. A man named Simon was baptized, and then sought to purchase the anointing of the Holy Spirit: he wished to give Peter money to have Peter lay hands on him. Peter replied, "Repent of this wickedness of yours and pray to the Lord that, if possible, your intention may be forgiven." (Acts 8:22) Why would Peter have told the man to repent and pray for forgiveness if the man had already been baptized?

In 2 Corinthians 7:9-10, Paul writes about the church at Corinth being saddened into repentance and that godly sorrow produces a salutary repentance. Why would the church need repentance? To seek forgiveness. The book of Revelation affirms this in multiple places.

In Revelation 2:3-5, addressed to the church in Ephesus, we read: "Moreover, you have endurance and have suffered for my name, and you have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: you have lost the love you had at first. Realize how far you have fallen. Repent, and do the works you did at first. Otherwise, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent." Why does the church need to repent? To seek forgiveness for its transgressions! I would have bolded sections of those three verses, but they are all important to the message: a Christian can fall back into a sinful nature, but God calls them back every time to repent!

In Revelation 2:13-16, addressed to the church in Pergamum, we read: "I know that you live where Satan's throne is, and yet you hold fast to my name and have not denied your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was martyred among you, where Satan lives. Yet I have a few things against you. You have some people there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who instructed Balak to put a stumbling block before the Israelites: to eat food sacrificed to idols and to play the harlot. Likewise, you also have some people who hold to the teaching of (the) Nicolaitans. Therefore, repent. Otherwise, I will come to you quickly and wage war against them with the sword of my mouth." The church (or specifically those who have transgressed) must repent!

Revelation 2:19-25 is addressed to Thyatira: "I know your works, your love, faith, service, and endurance, and that your last works are greater than the first. Yet I hold this against you, that you tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, who teaches and misleads my servants to play the harlot and to eat food sacrificed to idols. I have given her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her harlotry. So I will cast her on a sickbed and plunge those who commit adultery with her into intense suffering unless they repent of her works. I will also put her children to death. Thus shall all the churches come to know that I am the searcher of hearts and minds and that I will give each of you what your works deserve. But I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not uphold this teaching and know nothing of the so-called deep secrets of Satan: on you I will place no further burden, except that you must hold fast to what you have until I come." So God demands the prophetess repent, and those who follow her perversion of Christianity repent, but not those who do not follow her. Some of the members of the church, then, must repent and ask God for forgiveness for their going astray.

Revelation 3:3-4 is addressed to Sardis: "Remember then how you accepted and heard; keep it, and repent. If you are not watchful, I will come like a thief, and you will never know at what hour I will come upon you. However, you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments; they will walk with me dressed in white, because they are worthy." Again, most of the church has slipped and is in need of repentance.

Revelation 3:16,19 are addressed to Laodicea: "So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. [...] Those whom I love, I reprove and chastise. Be earnest, therefore, and repent." The church does not please God, so he urges them to be earnest and repent.

We will be forgiven for every sin, so long as we ask God to forgive, and so long as we show the same mercy on those who sin against us. We are not just forgiven once for what we have done, we are forgiven seventy times seven times (in the language of Jesus).

dear japhy:

Are we to be more focused on ourself and sin(s) and others and their sin(s) OR are we to be thanking and praising Him for what He has done, is doing, and will do for us?

Keep your eyes on Christ and behold His glory and may Christ the Living Word dwell in you richly!!!

Do you know the difference between the "King" & kingdom message and the "body" of Christ message? The answer is there if you do.

In Christ, Love abides!

Why do I have to choose? Why can't I be mindful of my sins, ask forgiveness, and glorify God? My eyes are on Christ, but sin is like a cataract. Sin is about focusing on one's self rather than on Christ, so in asking forgiveness, I am losing my life so that I might gain it in Christ.
  • Proverbs 27:17 says As iron sharpens iron, so man sharpens his fellow man.
  • Romans 14:19 says Let us then pursue what leads to peace and to building up one another.
  • Romans 15:14 says I myself am convinced about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, and able to admonish one another.
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:7 says Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, as indeed you do.
  • Titus 1:13 says Therefore, admonish them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith.
  • Colossians 3:16 says Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. That verse includes both admonishing one another and praising God. I don't have to choose between the two.
I believe it is Jesus's desire for us to ask forgiveness however often we need it. I believe it is Jesus's desire for us to remind one another of the commandments he imparted on us and to guide one another when someone goes astray. And I believe it is Jesus's desire for us to be ever-praiseful, ever-worshipful, and ever-loving of God and all His gifts. I don't believe Jesus asks us to choose which we do.

So do you ask for forgiveness for each and every sin you commit (that is, immediate confession)? ... and have committed? And do you remember each and every sin that you have committed since birth up to the present?

(Col.2:9-13)
For in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
And ye are complete in Him, Which is the Head of all principality and power:
In Whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ:
Buried with Him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with Him through the faith of the operation of God Who hath raised Him from the dead.
And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath He quickened together with Him, having forgiven you ALL TRESPASSES;

(1Cor.1:30)
But of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, Who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

Sadly, as my nature is human and my will is not always God's, I do sin again, and that is why I am glad that Jesus will forgive me every time I ask him.

What about the priests that sin? Do they confess their sins to the whole congregation since the congregation confesses their sins to him? Just wondering. Peace.

Yes, A Brother in Christ, Jesus has already paid the price of our sins. But we are still charged to ask God for forgiveness.
WHEN ONE BELIEVES THE GOSPEL THIS HAPPENS....
The Lord's Prayer contains a petition that we be forgiven as we forgive others.
Matt 6:9-18 is stated to the Jews not the church.... simpliar idea... this is Israel's mail
Matthew's gospel explains it further: if we forgive others, we are forgiven by God, but if we do not forgive others, we are not forgiven (Matthew 6:14-15).
john 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I AM, ye shall die in your sins.

gotta Given credit to God for your salvation...
Mark 11:25 agrees as well: "When you stand to pray, forgive anyone against whom you have a grievance, so that your heavenly Father may in turn forgive you your transgressions."
micah 7:19,psa 103:12,col 2:13,hebrew 10:16-17 already has its not conditional
Consider Acts 8:9-24. A man named Simon was baptized, and then sought to purchase the anointing of the Holy Spirit: he wished to give Peter money to have Peter lay hands on him. Peter replied, "Repent of this wickedness of yours and pray to the Lord that, if possible, your intention may be forgiven." (Acts 8:22)
this is the transition book alot of stuff in this book is changing all the way thru this book
Why would Peter have told the man to repent and pray for forgiveness if the man had already been baptized?

In 2 Corinthians 7:9-10, Paul writes about the church at Corinth being saddened into repentance and that godly sorrow produces a salutary repentance. Why would the church need repentance? To seek forgiveness. The book of Revelation affirms this in multiple places.
repentance = change your mind on a subject to God thoughts ... 1 john 3:2
I would have bolded sections of those three verses, but they are all important to the message: a Christian can fall back into a sinful nature, but God calls them back every time to repent!
.......

What about the priests that sin? Do they confess their sins to the whole congregation since the congregation confesses their sins to him? Just wondering. Peace.
No, priests go to confession administered by other priests.

Matt 6:9-18 is stated to the Jews not the church.... simpliar idea... this is Israel's mail
Oh, excuse me. Let me ignore it, then. Nevermind that those Jews were his apostles who continued his teaching. I'll also ignore the letter to Corinth (it was Corinth's mail) and Ephesus (it was their mail). OR, how about instead of disregarding them, I understand them in context and how they shaped the faith of the apostles and the early church?

john 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I AM, ye shall die in your sins.

gotta Given credit to God for your salvation...
John 8:24 has Jesus telling them that if they don't believe in him (as the Christ, and as God, since he used the phrase "I AM") that they will die in their sins. Meaning, they will be prey to the old covenant by which sin is repaid with death. What are you interpolating here? What do you read here that I'm missing?

And yes, I do give credit to God for my salvation: I have no savior but Jesus Christ the Word of God. Through him, I receive forgiveness for my sins. I really don't think we're arguing about that, though, so let's stay on topic.

micah 7:19,psa 103:12,col 2:13,hebrew 10:16-17 already has its not conditional
Well, I thought the Old Testament was Israel's mail.... but I suppose I'll consider the passages. Micah 7:18-19 reads: Who is there like you, the God who removes guilt and pardons sin for the remnant of his inheritance; Who does not persist in anger forever, but delights rather in clemency, And will again have compassion on us, treading underfoot our guilt? You will cast into the depths of the sea all our sins. God will again have compassion on us, not just once. Read Hosea! Time and time again, Israel is a faithless wife, and God chastises her and she returns to Him and He forgives her. Psalm 103:12 reads: As far as the east is from the west, so far have our sins been removed from us. And so they have. God removes our sin from us. Colossians 2:13 reads: And even when you were dead (in) transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, he brought you to life along with him, having forgiven us all our transgressions. Again, the context here is that the Colossians, who were not Jews, were welcomed into Christ despite their physical uncircumcision (as Paul clarified in v11: In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not administered by hand, by stripping off the carnal body, with the circumcision of Christ.) and that they too have forgiveness of sins through Christ. As for Hebrews 10:16-17, which quotes Jeremiah 31:31-34, it says that God will forgive the sins and transgressions of those who have received God's law into their hearts. Such a man does not commit sin, but has committed sin, and thus God forgives us of what we have done. He God shall forgive of us all our sins to come when we re-accept his law into our hearts, by returning to God, not by sacrifices and holocausts. Confession of our sins is part of that process of returning to God.

None of these verses speaks against the act of repentance again and again for the sins we commit after our conversion to Christianity. One might suppose, once we become Christians, we have free reign to do whatever we please, since God's grace covers all we do. But Paul speaks out harshly against that, saying we should not sin freely; read Romans 6.

this is the transition book alot of stuff in [the book of Acts] is changing all the way thru this book
Oh. So I should add Acts to the list of books to disregard, since they got stuff wrong there? No, I don't think I will. I think I will accept the examples in the book of Acts as part of the living faith of the church. The Gospels and the book of Acts also denote the distinction between baptism and the reception of the Holy Spirit. I don't think I'll ignore that as "changing all the way thru".

That truly is an unsatisfactory answer.

repentance = change your mind on a subject to God thoughts ... 1 john 3:2
I'm sorry, but I don't see the link between 1 John 3:2 and what you said. Could you please elaborate? In Biblical Hebrew, repentance is represented by two verbs which mean "to return" and "to feel sorrow". The Greek word is metanoia which means "to think differently after". It is true there is no need for another sacrifice because of my sin -- Christ took care of that -- but that doesn't change the fact that we do still sin. And so I confess my sins to God and ask His forgiveness, so I can turn back to Him.

Psalm 38:18 reads: I acknowledge my guilt and grieve over my sin. That is what Catholics do in the Sacrament of Penance: we admit to Almighty God that we have sinned against Him, and with humble and contrite hearts we are sorrowful for our transgressions, and ask for His help in refraining from sin. Proverbs 28:13b says he who confesses and forsakes [his sins] obtains mercy. We confess our sins to God and return to Him, so that we may be found without sport or blemish before Him (2 Peter 3:14).

john 8:24, 1 cor 15:2 unless you believe in vain...
1 Corinthians 15:2 reads: Through [the gospel I preached to you] you are also being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. I believe he is referring specifically to the "stumbling block" he defined at the very opening of the letter: The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. [...] But we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles (1 Corinthians 1:18,23). It is not believing in vain of the sacrifice of Christ to ask him to forgive you again. You're not asking for him to sacrifice himself on the cross again -- that was done once and once only to give us the ability to ask him, freely, to forgive us.

since we are all priest.. I talk thru the High priest who is Jesus Christ to the Father
Peter is quoting Scripture when he names us a "royal priesthood" and a "holy nation". "You shall be to me a kingdom of priests, a holy nation. That is what you must tell the Israelites." (Exodus 19:6) Now, while Israel was indeed a holy nation and a kingdom of priests, and the people participated in the liturgical sacrifices, the actual offering of those sacrifices -- the people who performed the roles of priests -- was the exclusive perogative of the Aaronic priesthood. Thus it is with the Christian people and the Christian priesthood in the strict sense (NAB footnotes on Exodus 19:6). For, as Paul asks: Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work mighty deeds? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? (1 Corinthians 12:29-30)

Catholic confession does not assume -- not for an instant -- that there is some mediator between us and Christ. Rather, the minister of reconciliation is performing the act given to the apostles and their successors:
Since Christ entrusted to his apostles the ministry of reconciliation (cf. John 20:23; 2 Corinthians 5:18), bishops who are their successors, and priests, the bishops' collaborators, continue to exercise this ministry. Indeed bishops and priests, by virtue of the sacrament of Holy Orders, have the power to forgive all sins "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." (CCC 1461)
Priests only have "the power to forgive all sins" because it is through Christ that the forgiveness occurs. It is a ministry, 2 Corinthians 5:18 makes that very clear. A ministry has ministers, and John 20:23 makes it clear Jesus declared the apostles as the first ministers of it. The apostolic succession represents the passing on of this holy office.

ephesians is the church as corinth's is

there are two different words for doctrine in the greek.
didache..teaching for faith and pratice
didaskialia for are faith but not pratice

example titus 1:9 has both words

you sound offended... I am sorry that was not my intension

John 8:24 has Jesus telling them that if they don't believe in him (as the Christ, and as God, since he used the phrase "I AM") that they will die in their sins. you say ask for forgivness
I say believe in Christ work

understanding that one is a sinner is key to believing to who needs God ... Matt 9:13
Well, I thought the Old Testament was Israel's mail.... but I suppose I'll consider the passages. You will cast into the depths of the sea all our sins. God will again have compassion on us, not just once. Read Hosea!
in the OT we can see how God works and see God character ... but we have different house rules..... things have change on earth but God has not changed
Time and time again, Israel is a faithless wife, and God chastises her and she returns to Him and He forgives her. Psalm 103:12 reads: As far as the east is from the west, so far have our sins been removed from us. And so they have. God removes our sin from us. correct but some christian my just read to 6:1 and stop there and not read vs 2

yet there is romans 4:8 blessed is the man to whom the LORD will not count sin...

love this verse... key to understanding the grace of God

if God does not count sin against us ... and He offers must better things than the OSN why would I do those things .... 1 peter 2:11

Oh. So I should add Acts to the list of books to disregard,
see above

I'm sorry, but I don't see the link between 1 John 3:2 and what you said.

In Christ we are all holy and righteous and sons of God[where is Christ] and this is how the Father sees us because He counts us to have died with Christ, burried with Christ and resurrected with Christ

Right now here on earth ... we are the not those things all the time but we can be .. we are children of God who need child training

1 john 3:2 is when we become son of God, where we get all are promises

Could you please elaborate? In Biblical Hebrew, repentance is represented by two verbs which mean "to return" and "to feel sorrow".
feelings have nothing to do with this ..john 4:23-24 worship in spirit and truth..why ...are soul is where are emotions are and they can desceive us...
The Greek word is metanoia which means "to think differently after"
change your mind ...same thing
. It is true there is no need for another sacrifice because of my sin -- Christ took care of that -- but that doesn't change the fact that we do still sin. And so I confess my sins to God and ask His forgiveness, so I can turn back to Him.
no arguement

That is what Catholics do in the Sacrament of Penance: we admit to Almighty God that we have sinned against Him, and with humble and contrite hearts we are sorrowful for our transgressions, and ask for His help in refraining from sin.
I go boldly to the throne of grace saying I screwed up and Move forward not looking behind ... hebrew 10:19, phil 3:13
Proverbs 28:13b says he who confesses and forsakes [his sins] obtains mercy. We confess our sins to God and return to Him, so that we may be found without sport or blemish before Him (2 Peter 3:14).
phil 1:6, eph 5:25-27
1 Corinthians 15:2 reads: Through [the gospel I preached to you] you are also being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.
there arew three different greek words for vain in 1 cor 15

vs2 eike..vain without purpose
vs 10 kenos.. vain to quality/content
vs 17 mataios ... vain without result
I believe he is referring specifically to the "stumbling block" he defined at the very opening of the letter: The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
