  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Uncondition Election and the condition of the heart

My question is when it comes to election, is it possible that God considers the condition of the heart as a criterion for his choice? I know the bible says that works don't come into play with election, but the condition of the heart isn't a work. It is said in the Old Testament that Josiah's heart was tender and he humbled himself before God which is why God gave him grace. Jesus said the pure in heart will see God in the Beattitudes. Also, God told Samuel that he looks on the heart and not appearance. I know that the bible says the heart is deceitful and desperately wicked but certainly there are tender-hearted people in the world as was King Josiah. Thanks for your help.

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"

"I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me."

"Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be."

The heart is taken into consideration and as you can see the heart is deceitful and wicked. Fallen humanity in their natural state is lost and the promise of the Gospel (the New Covenant of Grace) is a new heart, "But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people."

Yours in the Lord,

jm

If God considered your heart when he was choosing to save you, He wouldn't save you.

Be glad he doesn't consider it, because your heart is evil and disgusting.

" It is said in the Old Testament that Josiah's heart was tender and he humbled himself before God which is why God gave him grace"

It also says in the OT that it is God who is responsible for giving people hearts to obey him. (Read 2 Chron 30:1-12)

So, any goodness that a person's heart has comes from God himself, not the person.

Indeed. Including...

Ezekiel 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

All unsaved persons have an evil heart of unbelief.
Hebrews 3:12
Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evilheart of unbelief in departing from the living God;

For saved persons, they have been given the new heart.

Hebrews 10:22
let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

Luke 6
43 “For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. 45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

See you are either the good tree or the bad tree, a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad. There is no inbetween state of existence.

Matthew 7:16-19New King James Version (NKJV)
16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

Matthew 12:33-34New King James Version (NKJV)
A Tree Known by Its Fruit
33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.

34 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

Those who bear good fruit to God are speaking it from their 'good' heart that God has given to them. God has ordained His people to bear good fruit which includes speaking the truth in Christ.
