U.N. Predicts Disaster if Global Warming Not Checked
PETER JAMES SPIELMANNJune 29, 1989

UNITED NATIONS (AP) _ A senior U.N. environmental official says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000.

Coastal flooding and crop failures would create an exodus of ″eco- refugees,′ ′ threatening political chaos, said Noel Brown, director of the New York office of the U.N. Environment Program, or UNEP.

He said governments have a 10-year window of opportunity to solve the greenhouse effect before it goes beyond human control.

As the warming melts polar icecaps, ocean levels will rise by up to three feet, enough to cover the Maldives and other flat island nations, Brown told The Associated Press in an interview on Wednesday.

Coastal regions will be inundated; one-sixth of Bangladesh could be flooded, displacing a fourth of its 90 million people. A fifth of Egypt’s arable land in the Nile Delta would be flooded, cutting off its food supply, according to a joint UNEP and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency study.

″Ecological refugees will become a major concern, and what’s worse is you may find that people can move to drier ground, but the soils and the natural resources may not support life. Africa doesn’t have to worry about land, but would you want to live in the Sahara?″ he said.

UNEP estimates it would cost the United States at least $100 billion to protect its east coast alone.

We still have 10 years? We had 10 years back in the 1970s too. I'm sure when the year 2100 comes, we'll still have 10 years. Maybe there's something wrong with their clock.

They have been CRYING WOLF for so long that nobody takes it seriously anymore.

And what would we DO anyhow?

Outlaw combustion engines? Keep cows from farting because of increase of methane in the atmosphere?

Change the term GLOBAL WARMING to CLIMATE CHANGE? That oughtta solve everything.

They were expecting this, so they created a weather machine so they can make it look more convincing later on. The weather machine is totally holding back the effects of an inevitable disaster ... okay I'll pass the tin foil hat around the circle now.

We should stay humble. Regardless of our inability to pin down when, what Christ says in Luke about the oceans will happen, because He said it will.

If the floods don't get us, y2k surely will.

This is madness!

At the time, I actually thought that was a much bigger problem than global warming.

However, it also became to sensational, to the point of sillyness

Dr. Chaim Henry Tejman on climate change!

Global Warming
Our environment is obviously undergoing major changes, and I believe that trees have a vital role in the atmospheric balance. Trees possess the ability to absorb much of the incoming energy. Gradually, trees that have absorbed energy submerge beneath the ground and turn into coal. Mankind is presently consuming unprecedented amounts of energy. Instead of storing the energy, like nature, we are releasing it into the atmosphere. Therefore, an international effort must be made to stop cutting down trees and to plant as many more as possible.

Israel confronts world hunger with a solar-powered desert oasis

The Carl Cantrell alternative theory fits with Isaiah 35
and therefore can be sold to conservatives.
"So how is our problem of continental drying causing global warming? It all has to do with vegetation and sunlight. When sun light hits a plant, it causes a process which we call photosynthesis where the energy from the sun light creates oxygen for us to breathe, water for us to drink, and is stored as sugar for plants and animals to use. When the same sun light hits the soil, all of its energy turns into heat and is radiated back into the atmosphere.. ."

"Therefore, the less vegetation you have on the planet, the more sunlight is being turned into heat and the warmer the planet becomes...."

"Just take a look at any satellite picture of the earth showing heat and you will see that our deserts are the warmest spots on the planet by far. More heat is being generated by just one of the top four or five deserts than by all of our cities combined.... "

"The truth is that you can do more to decrease global warming by just reducing the average temperature for the Sahara Desert by one or two degrees than if we humans completely quit using fossil fuels and returned to the cave…."

"So, how would you start working to resolve this problem? Easy, cool the deserts and get some vegetation growing on them as soon as possible. But the method is much more complex than that. You have to use the prevailing trade winds in relation to the deserts to get the best results as quickly as possible and it will be extremely expensive…."

"Then we build desalination plants along the coast near these water sheds and pipe water to the tops or ridges of the water sheds…"

"We need to start working on this as soon as possible because, if the planet reaches a point to where it is warming faster than our technology can possibly stop or reverse this warming trend, then our planet is lost and all life will cease to exist on this planet within a relatively short period of time. We will need to start with the largest and hottest deserts because cooling them will have the greatest benefit in the least time (Global Warming II by biologist Carl Cantrell)."

How much has the globe warmed?

That's the interesting part and why scientists are predicting disaster. The majority of the warming has happened since 1975, read second and fifth paragraphs from NASA's website:World of Change: Global Temperatures

In other words it might warm exponentially with the years! I believe they were tracking the time from 1800's or since industrialization began emissions.

The idea that it can be checked, is just a theory.

I didn't see that!
That article should stand as a monument to the silliness of how we only have 10 years left, and a reminder to those who keep telling us that.

Some good news.....

Carbon Dioxide Fertilization Greening Earth, Study Finds

Carbon Dioxide Fertilization Greening Earth, Study Finds
From a quarter to half of Earth’s vegetated lands has shown significant greening over the last 35 years largely due to rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, according to a new study published in the journal Nature Climate Change on April 25.

An international team of 32 authors from 24 institutions in eight countries led the effort, which involved using satellite data from NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer instruments to help determine the leaf area index, or amount of leaf cover, over the planet’s vegetated regions. The greening represents an increase in leaves on plants and trees equivalent in area to two times the continental United States.

I think that the article stands a monument for the reading skills (or lack of) for certain people on these forums.

The article does not say that world will end in 10 years.

"UNITED NATIONS (AP) _ A senior U.N. environmental official says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000."

The global warming trend has not been reversed and there are plenty of nations in danger of disappearing due to climate change.

Countries at risk of disappearing due to climate change | Sustainability for all

The global warming is hard to predict accurately due to many unknown factors and their effects so just quoting some article from 1989 - especially when reading it wrong - hardly qualifies for being expert on the subject.

We know some of the effects of global warming both enviromental and how those effects will effect humanity.

Effects of global warming - Wikipedia

Time for ignorance is over. Educate yourself. The global warming is not Chinese hoax despite some anti-intellectual rhetoric.

Also there was another feel good thread for those with deep aversion to intelligence about this exact same article on these forums so digging that up should make up for some mirth for those not bothering to read or research the subject.
