Matthew 5 and 6 can be confusing because the world lives and does is the opposite.
Matthew 6:
1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. 2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: 4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
This word alms is not found anywhere but in Matthew , Luke and Acts. It is used in text as money or an offering.
We have desecrated many Scriptures but this is at top of the list. We advertise what we do unlike anytime in history. How we spend money , how we help people, how we do anything even in God's name , is not done in secret in our culture. We advertise just to get more alms, we make people walk up front and all kinds of terrible things to do the opposite of this command in chapter 6.
We never really intended to do bad but since the Garden satan has whispered did God really say?
I ask Him in prayer how we had went so wrong in this and He lead me back to Matthew 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
How on earth do we shine our light and yet follow Matthew 6:1-4? satan has always took something as simple as do not eat from this tree and turned it to thistles, thorns , death and pain ...
When we do anything to seen by other humans or make more alms , it was not done with a heart of doing it for God. We are taught from day one in public school and the world , show off our trophies , pride , announce and advertise, that is what the world does and says.
To follow Matthew 5 and 6 is to do everything for God and not for any kind of human recognition or gain. To be the Light on the hill is not advertising what we did for someone ,or something, it is to be different in a dark world. It is to not look anything like the world. It is to follow all Jesus is asking us in Matthew 5, that our reward may be given in Heaven. It is to know what Matthew 5:19-20 means and take it as serious as life and death .
Matthew 5: 19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
We have twisted and are twisting this very day the Scriptures of God and do not even take it serious.
Get alone with the Bible ask God to show and teach in this time of eating from the wrong tree...It was some time ago when I saw everyone knew what I was doing and told me so with praise , God convicted me to stop.
When was the last time you , your business or your church did something and it was not sounded as a trumpet?
To be the Light on the hill in this world that is all about suing, is to follow Matthew 5:40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.
To be the Light on the hill in a world of hate, clubs and cliques, is to follow Matthew 5: 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; 45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? 47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
God forgive us , help us to be about You and Heaven and not look like or want what the world looks like or wants …God is the reward and rewarder, Jesus can place an alms in the mouth of a fish , we do not need to ask from humans.
Luke 12:33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.
