We have seen how Scripture defines "worship." What does "man," say "worship" means?
According to connectusfund.org, you show worship through:
Prayer, thanksgiving, remembrance, testimony, service unto others, words, marvel at God's creation, body expressions, memorizing Bible verses, meditation, confessing sins, journaling, giving money, fellowship, how you work, your life, sharing your faith, art, humility, joy, reverence, and awe.
That is a great list, but I have one request, please show me the Scripture proof. Show me a verse, just one verse that says giving money is worship. Please show me a verse that states that confessing sins is worship. I am a meat and potatoes guy, very simple, elementary. I take the Missouri approach to Scripture study, "Show me."
Am I being unreasonable? Am I making an impossible demand? I'll repeat it. I don't care what people want to believe. I base my belief on Scripture and Scripture alone. I am a preacher. I must point out false teaching, not because "I think something is false teaching," but rather because it is false teaching compared to what Scripture teaches." Whether or not you agree with me does not concern me. I am not looking for numbers or a favored status among men. I only serve my God, and I am only answerable to Him.
Gal 1:10-11 Do I try to get the approval of men or God? Do I strive to please people? If I were pleasing people, I would not be the servant of the Messiah. For what I teach you, brothers, the gospel I proclaimed is not man-made. I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it by any man. I was given the (true) gospel through the revelation of Jesus, the Messiah.
There it is, people, teaching that is man-made versus God-inspired Scripture truth.
According to a book titled "Seven Words of Worship: The Key to a Lifetime of Experiencing God," by Mike Harland and Stan Moser. The seven words are Creation, Grace, Love, Response, Expression, Presence, and Experience.
Hey, if that is what they believe, more power to them! It's not in Scripture, but what does that matter in the E.C. world? Their motto is, "We make up what the bible says."
I will give some excerpts from a sermon I heard on the radio a while ago. Since I am not allowed to mention names, you will either believe me or not if I listened to a sermon. If you accept that I did hear a sermon, I want you to notice the manipulation going on here. The biggest ally of false teaching is the lack of knowledge about Scripture among those listening.
"The Lord has been working on my heart to the point that I have to preach this message."
Ah, God wanted him to preach on this and directly communicated with him through prompting the heart.
"I know many people have struggled with this subject."
Maybe in the E.C. world. This statement makes it seems that worship is a confusing topic among the "churches."
"Worship is the ultimate priority."
No, obedience is! Ecc 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep His commandments. This is the whole duty of man. Deut 6:2 That you will fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and commandments... Micah 6:8 He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you, but to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God?
"We have all experienced failures in worship."
Huh? What? That statement makes no sense. Worship is not something you can "fail" at. You either worship or don't worship.
"The subject of worship is illusive."
No, you have to define the words. He is turning this into some "mystical" thing.
"The struggles you and I have with worship."
Turning it into something it is not. Like worship is something hard to "perform."
"There are so many different ideas on worship."
Uh, yeah, when everybody decides what worship is or should be for themselves.
"The priority of worship."
Repetition is used to plant the idea firmly in your brain.
"I deeply desire to know more about what the bible says about worship."
Um, you don't know how to study Scripture for yourself? Are you saying that there are "unsearchable" things about worship in Scripture, things that can't be discovered through study? Making worship this "huge" biblical doctrine.
"We offer our worship to God."
Ludicrous. Not found in Scripture.
"What the bible says about the priority of worship."
The third time he has said it.
"The highest priority in God's word."
Do you see how this works? The listeners are hanging on to every word he says. They have no idea if this is found in Scripture or not, but because he is the "pastor," what he is saying "must" be true, "because the "pastor" I listen to would never teach me lies." He has not quoted any bible text to validate this or any of his statements. What is the "teaching" everyone believes now? That worship is a priority and must be in the "bible." This is how circular logic works. The speaker puts forth a premise and speaks it as if it is an already established Scripture truth. This is only about five minutes into the sermon.
"Worship is the highest priority in God's word."
"Let's drive this point home; Let's keep the focus on this." This is the fifth time he has mentioned this. Now he assures people that this concept is indeed in the bible.
"Worship is the priority commandment of God, the first commandment in the Law."
He then reads from Ex 20:5, with his spin, "Thou shalt not bow down to them in worship..." He says, "God commanded us to worship Him." God does command His people not to worship other gods. But, there is no verse in Scripture where God "commands people to worship Him." Not one time in Scripture is there any verse that speaks of God getting angry, chastening, or punishing the Jews for not worshipping Him. He never sent an enemy to punish the Jews because they didn't worship Him. God never calls for the Jews to return and worship Him. It is understood that if you believe in and obey God, you will worship (bow down, prostrate yourself) Him. It is something you will do, not something you have to do. It's the same as jumping in the pool; you will get wet. So now he has twisted his first verse by adding to God's word, and he has now used this twisted verse as his proof text.
"Worship is the number one concern."
He then goes to the N.T. but doesn't cite the verse. He said, "Someone came up to Jesus and asked him what the greatest commandment was. 'Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love and worship God." He didn't give the location of the verse because he didn't want any of his audience, live or watching T.V. or listening to the radio, to be able to read the verse for himself. The verse he referenced was Mat 22:36, ...Thou shalt love thy God with thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.' But since most people know this interchange, nobody questioned what this "pastor" said. But, there is no mention of worship in this verse! This is the second verse he has twisted by adding to God's word. The people listening are convinced that the two verses emphasize "the priority of worship." Further establishing that the false premise is "biblical." This is not an accident on the "pastor's" part. He did this intentionally, on purpose, knowing that he was lying! Another motto of the E.C. world comes to mind, "We will tell people what to believe and why they believe it."
He then goes back to the O.T. and "teaches" about the building of the Tabernacle, except he calls it a "worship center." He then rattles off, "The Lord built a worship center...His worship center has to be moved from place to place...Seven chapters in Lev to ensure the worship center was built just right...God was concerned about His people and their worship...The worship center was to be placed in the center of the people."
"The center of God's plan for the people was worship."
Again, a statement not found in Scripture adds to God's word.
He cited Mat 2:11, 8:2, 9:18, 14:33,15:25, and 28:17. These verses show that people worshipped Jesus. The big problem is he has not defined what worship is! (In all of these verses, Scripture teaches that each person involved all bowed down or prostrated themselves before Jesus.)
"Worship is the one thing we must do if we don't do anything at all."
Huh?
He cited Psalm 27:4 but misquoted it, "The greatest man, the king, said out of all things that I may come and worship God."
The verse reads One thing I have desired of the LORD, that I will seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD and to enquire in his temple."
Another twisted verse.
He cited Phili 3:10, but yet again, he misquotes, "That I may know Him. For Paul, the main thing was to know and worship God.
Phili 3:10 That I may know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made comfortable unto his death." Do you understand what is going on here, the lies, the manipulation, the false teaching in this sermon? He is counting on the fact that those listening don't know Scripture, that nobody will ever dare to question him, that nobody is going to "search the Scriptures to see if these things were so, Acts 17:11," that he does not have to answer for his lies, and, he knows he is lying! Anybody who is going to teach from the bible, and will use verses, will always check the verses first!
He cited Lk 10:38-42 and said it was his favorite story. However, in his commentary, he said, "Mary was sitting at the feet of Jesus adoring and worshipping him."
He said that Jesus said to Mary (vs. 42) Listen, I am going to sort this out. What is the most important thing, the needful thing? To worship God.
"The Lord has taught me that worship needs to be at the center of all we do."
Again, Jesus is communicating with a "super pastor" directly and instructing the "pastor" in what Jesus "wants." Man, I wish Jesus would teach me!
"It has to be at the center of all we do; if not, we are not functioning as an N.T. church."
"Yes, the word of God is important, but worship needs to be at the center of all we do."
Did you catch this? He is implying that worship is more important than the word of God.
He quotes Psalm 22:3 but says, "God inhabits the praise and worship of His people."
I stopped there; I couldn't listen anymore!
It is a fact that when you watch someone speak, you miss a lot. I challenge anyone to listen to a "pastor" without watching. Instead of just listening to him talk, pay attention to what he says, make notes. You will be surprised at the things you notice, something you would have missed if you watched him. If you listen to media besides TV or radio, you can pause or rewind. You can do the same thing I did with many "pastors" from YouTube or their apps. I can point out all kinds of things and prove false teaching seven days a week. But, when people catch lies for themselves, that has the most personal impact. You have a marvelous tool for bible study right there with your phone. Just type in a verse reference, ask to define a word, etc. You will find free sites where you can read a verse, see different translations of a verse, find out the meanings of words, read commentaries, and so forth. You can read articles and bible studies.
