  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

1. Identical twins have 100% the same DNA.

2. Identical twins are often raised in the same household and often have similiar experiences.

3. Identical twins share some traits.

4. Identical twins are often quite different.

All true, correct?

Where do the difference come from then, if not the soul?

Not necessarilly. After the very first cell division, mutations can occur. Their DNA will still be very close, but not necessarilly 100% identical

they have similar experiences, not identical experiences.

And often very similar...

From all those little differences?

Ah...it's either strict determinism or nothing, huh? Thankfully it doesn't work that way. Brain cells wire themselves in response to stimuli. Twins have similiar, but not the same, stimuli.

And often, out of a desire for individuality (we aren't herd animals), they seek out different experiences to further differentiate themselves.

Why? Where do we get that desire? Could it be from a free, rational soul?

Try socio-cultural influences. Individuality is a Western notion. Development is likely somewhat different in more collectivist cultures.

I think the overwhelming number of similarities between twins points away from the concept of a soul. Supposing that souls are handed out at conception/two weeks into gestation/birth/14th birthday/etc. from a box, one would suppose that fairly regularly twins would emerge with radically different personalities. However if the twins are "governed" by identical or almost identical genetics, one would suppose that fairly regularly twins would emerge with similar personalities.

So twins in other cultures dont try to be individuals?

Depends on the culture. In Japan, for instance, nonconformity was a no-no. Not only were siblings more alike, but even the unrelated. Not so much, I hear, anymore. :)

But your problem (the one you haven't addressed) is why twins raised together tend to have less in common than twins reared apart.

I'm sure you've heard all the stories about twins reuniting to find themselves working in the same fields, with the same haircuts and clothing tastes...

Nor have you sat down and thought about when twins tend to individuate. When they start socializing, actually. Prior to kindergarten, twins tend to dress the same and act much the same. Once they start socializing, they don't want to be confused with the other person.

We discussed the topic of twins and souls a couple of months ago. I demonstrated conclusively that, when it comes to twins only one has a soul (ergo the evil twin syndrome). The soul is imparted at conception - that is a biological fact, when the embryo splits, only one gets the soul. Souls cannot divide, nor can they occur after conception.

Wow, I would love for you to go to a convention of twins and announce to them that one of them in each set has no soul!

What about identical triplets? Two souless people?

This sounds like a vestige from the days when one twin was always killed, out of fear.

My question is, how do you tell which one has a soul and which one doesn't if one isn't "bad"?

Could you identify the science paper where this is proven? I mean the soul stuff? One twin has no soul and is what soulless or evil? I know tow girls. Karen and Emma. Both married. Both happy with kids. One is a lawyer in Calgary AL, and the other a housewife in Phoenix AZ. Which one is evil? I need to know before Thanks giving. We don't wanna have trouble over the holidays. LOL
p.s. names have been changed.
