Thread to track the "200 Trade Deals" President Trump claimed in his interview with Time Magazine on April 22, 2025:

Your trade adviser, Peter Navarro, says 90 deals in 90 days is possible. We're now 13 days into the point from when you lifted the reciprocal, the discounted reciprocal tariffs. There's zero deals so far. Why is that?

[Trump] No, there’s many deals.

When are they going to be announced?

[Trump] You have to understand, I'm dealing with all the companies, very friendly countries. We're meeting with China. We're doing fine with everybody. But ultimately, I've made all the deals.

Not one has been announced yet. When are you going to announce them?

[Trump] I’ve made 200 deals.

You’ve made 200 deals?

[Trump] 100%.

May 8, 2025:

Trump announces a trade deal with the UK:

The agreement will leave in place a 10 percent tariff that Mr. Trump imposed on Britain and other nations globally at the beginning of April. But it will pare back other tariffs Mr. Trump imposed on British steel, aluminum and automobiles. In return, the British will open up access to beef, poultry, ethanol, soft drinks, cereal and other products.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick indicated that one of the concessions given by the United States was to lower a 25 percent tariff on British cars to 10 percent. “He agreed they could send 100,000 cars into America and only pay a 10 percent tariff, and that protects their car industry,” Mr. Lutnick said. He said Rolls-Royce engines and plane parts will also come over tariff free, while the United Kingdom will buy $10 billion of Boeing airplanes.

Are there even 200 civil servants left in the government to make deals or is Trump making all of them solo?

Trump and Lutnick are fully capable of negotiating 200 deals before American businesses run out of inventory.. Civil servants only get in the way.

fyi, the U.S. has never had trade deals with 200 countries....but that's beside the point.

Is that because there's not 200 countries or because Biden was a terrible President

What (Real) Estate Agent Orange neglects to mention on the whole beef and poultry side of the deal is that if the UK Government has committed to not lowering food standards (and if they try then 1) they'll definitely lose the next election, and 2) there'll be near-constant protests from British farmers).

Trump says US will unilaterally set new tariff rates for scores of countries

President says letters revealing rates will be sent out within weeks as Washington lacks capacity for individual deals

Highlighting the challenge for the White House to negotiate deals with scores of countries at once, Trump said it was “not possible to meet the number of people that want to see us”.

Speaking at a meeting with business leaders in the United Arab Emirates on the US president’s tour of the Gulf, he said: “We have, at the same time, 150 countries that want to make a deal, but you’re not able to see that many countries.”

But..I don't understand. That can't be right. He'd already made 200 deals shortly after imposing the tariffs.

But he can't have (gulp)...lied. Surely. It was only going to take him a few weeks:

"I would say, over the next three to four weeks, and we're finished, by the way," Trump told Time. "We'll be finished."

Say it ain't so, Donald!

"EAT THE TARIFFS"

[Wait, I thought the exporting countries paid the tariffs]

Mr. Trump trained his ire on Walmart, just days after the low-cost retailer told investors that it might have to increase prices soon. Doug McMillon, the chief executive, said on Walmart’s latest earnings call last week that it probably would not be able to “absorb all the pressure” from the president’s tariffs for much longer.

In response, the president demanded in a post on social media on Saturday that Walmart “EAT THE TARIFFS,” rather than pass any new costs on to customers. He argued that Walmart had generated billions of dollars in profit last year, so it could afford to shoulder any added expenses.

“I’ll be watching, and so will your customers!!!” Mr. Trump said.
