maybe not to the degree, but a lot of this he was planning, the US is losing their economic power, most of their alies are turning against them. Not sure what trump expects to have happen by threatening Canada and Mexico, and Gaza, turning on Ukraine and such.I don't think anyone expected this.
Perhaps a less favourable outcome than Ukraine would hope for if it ended the war, but this is just too much.
I think Ukraine would cede territory so long as there were concrete plans in place to prevent this happening again, like NATO membership.
That would have been the compromise that seemed lost likely to me. Both sides lose, both sides gain, and ol' Donald gets another 'deal' to tout.
Ooh! Ooh! Does that mean if Trump starts trouble in Greenland or Panama we should get an election, too? Can't wait.Republican lawmakers are backing President Donald Trump’s insistence that Ukraine hold elections, even if they don’t share his belief that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is a "dictator."
"I think you have to give them some space… There is a negotiation going on," said Sen. Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D.
Trump on Tuesday night said Ukraine "never should have started" the war, and doubled down by calling Zelenskyy a "dictator" because Ukraine hasn’t held elections since Russia invaded the country in 2022.
"Ukraine clearly did not start this war," Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., wrote on X. "The fact is that Russia invaded Ukraine and must be held accountable. Otherwise, aggressors will be encouraged in their bad actions."
Still, the Nebraska senator commended Trump for trying to end the war.
Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., backed up the president’s push for elections. "We held elections during World War II. Britain held elections during World War II. If they're a democracy, they should hold elections. I don't think that's difficult," he told reporters Thursday.
"[Zelenskyy] is the elected leader of the country," said Hawley. "But, you know, at a certain point you've got to hold elections."
Vice President JD Vance was on Capitol Hill for a lunch with Republican senators, but the president's bold assertion about the Ukrainian leader was not a topic of discussion, according to Hawley.
Zelenskyy was originally up for re-election in April 2024, but Ukraine’s constitution bars holding elections until the president lifts the martial law order he instituted after the 2022 invasion.
"Well, we've got to have elections," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said when asked about the comments.
How to put this in a clear manner...?Zelinsky is no better than Putin.
And here with parroting/implying that Zelenskyi is a dictator.I'm done supporting crazy dictators all around the world myself, and I'm done creating the conditions around the world that support them.
Aah, yes, the mineral rights. The "deal" that Trump tried to push on Zelenskyi without properly letting him read it first, with no security guarantees and a deal that makes post-WW1 Germany go: "Well we got off lightly in comparison."We already know this is a war for mineral rights. No need to destroy the Ukrainian people over it. We can work something out.
It was Biden who invited Putin to invade in the first place.
I was happy to see democrats lose. Not happy that Trump won, but I thought Trump would be a better pick than democrats.
He is quickly changing my mind lately, he is worse than them.
At least we see his true colours. Some sadly think he is a Christian. He is actually the opposite.
There are no longer enough non-maga republicans left to go with the 25th.I cannot believe an American President said the things he said.
This isn't just a new low for Trump - it's a new low for America.
When will it trigger the 25th?
Now Zelenskyy's a dictator?
Do you want to nuke Russia, Ukraine or both? That's what it's called when you do away with both elections and a free press. rightly fits the definition. He's an actual dictator and no, he's not some white knight. He's in this for all the US dollars he can funnel out of it, that's it.. he's worse, far far far worse, than a used car salesman with his silly need more money tours... How about, need a peace deal
And by the way, no, I don't like wars of attrition. They aren't good, at all. If we are going to do warfare let it be maneuver warfare.
Stop this throwing bodies like cannon fodder, we have nukes for goodness sakes. If we are going to throw bodies may as well win the war in the same day.
I say this later more tongue in cheek but it is a point, why bother with nonsense when we do have all the power? Which is called peace through strength... And it saves lives.
Now let us use it wisely, because all we really want is peace, and to be good neighbors, and to have good neighbors.

GOP senators back Trump's demand for Ukraine elections, but won't call Zelenskyy 'dictator'

The Republican party had a choice and they made it.I wish Mike Pence was president but there was no alternative; absolutely: none.
I'm sorry to tell you, but geopolitics doesn't work that way. This is a very narrow view of the world.. That's funny I have thought the same thing about many on the other side.
Seems we may have different spirits? mine is tied to my land. I have no desire of global empire.
My personal preferences is to do well by everyone, treat everyone with fairness and require the same respect in return. I'm good with good neighbors, not with anything else.
No, he is not a dictator. Actually, funnily enough, if he were to organise an election, he would be more of a dictator as Ukrainian constitution says that elections will not be held during times of open conflict/martial law. So he'd be breaking the local law in doing do. So, you are lying here.
But... You are not doing any war currently. Ukraine is.And by the way, no, I don't like wars of attrition. They aren't good, at all. If we are going to do warfare let it be maneuver warfare.
Aah, yes. The "let's nuke 'em" arguement, because that always ends up well.Stop this throwing bodies like cannon fodder, we have nukes for goodness sakes. If we are going to throw bodies may as well win the war in the same day.
No, you do not want peace. That's very obvious by the way you are going about this, because you want to appease Putin at the cost of Ukraine. And "being good neighbours" is a funny thing to claim to want while throwing tariffs around willy nilly, lying about about your allies and friendly nations and trying to push deals that make Treaty of Versailles look good. And we know what that deal caused to happen in the future.I say this later more tongue in cheek but it is a point, why bother with nonsense when we do have all the power? Which is called peace through strength... And it saves lives.

Well, when a definition of "democracy" suspends elections and all else things that Zelinsky has done people can keep it, I won't support it.. It is important to understand how democracy functions before labeling someone as a dictator.
