  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think loving people is true religion and we all know the definition given in James 1:27 of looking out for widows and orphans. I think those are two specifics of a longer list.

This last year I've been applying true religion as loving my neighbor by being a friend to them. Its been a major blessing to me and from the fed back I'm getting to them as well.

What is true religion?

True Religion would be the practice of mans attempts to make him/herself a better person in terms of morals, ethics, principles, and high values used outwardly toward Others. And, it is often the method in which many people try to get to God to gain his favor .

While this above practice is admirable and certainly with tangible benefits, it falls short of Gods ideal ...for... it is a real personal dynamic RELATIONSHIP with God thru what Christ accomplished on calvary, that is of even greater importance because of Ones eternal residence hanging in the balance based on whether Ones many sins are forgiven and dealt with adequately and completely based on what Christ alone did . Once this has been recieved/achieved, only then does the actions of practicing religion truly have complete benefit , otherwise it is solely a temporary earthly pursuit (albiet admirable) .

Being truly saved SHOULD result in a changed life including showing greater love, compassion, and empathy toward Others .. particularly the downtrodden , infirmed, and less fortunate in society.

Religion....to me.....is man's way of trying to reach God.

If I do this and this and this, God will accept me and if I don't do that, or that, or that, then God will accept me.

What religion fails in, is what TheyCallMeDavid said, that only thru Christ can we be saved. We can't do anything lest we should boast.

Interestingly when I went to look up the specific definition of the word religion I found this from the Dictionary.com site

1. belief in, worship of, or obedience to a supernatural power or powers considered to be divine or to have control of human destiny 2. any formal or institutionalized expression of such belief: the Christian religion 3. the attitude and feeling of one who believes in a transcendent controlling power or powers 4. chiefly RC Church the way of life determined by the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience entered upon by monks, friars, and nuns: to enter religion 5. something of overwhelming importance to a person: football is his religion 6. archaic a. the practice of sacred ritual observances b. sacred rites and ceremonies [C12: via Old French from Latin religiō fear of the supernatural, piety, probably from religāre to tie up, from re- + ligāre to bind]

I found the BBM parts especially interesting because of the "to tie up, or to bind" is exactly what "religion" does. It ties us up to a set of rules, practices, and beliefs and the other BBM part about the football being a religion was just funny because it's silly to me.

This is the comment I found on the Greek.
An example of doing work.
religious . . . religion--The Greek expresses the external service or exercise of religion, "godliness" being the internal soul of it. "If any man think himself to be (so the Greek) religious, that is, observant of the offices of religion, let him know these consist not so much in outward observances, as in such acts of mercy and humble piety ( Micah 6:7 Micah 6:8 ) as visiting the fatherless, &c., and keeping one's self unspotted from the world" ( Matthew 23:23 ). James does not mean that these offices are the great essentials, or sum total of religion; but that, whereas the law service was merely ceremonial, the very services of the Gospel consist in acts of mercy and holiness, and it has light for its garment, its very robe being righteousness [TRENCH]. The Greek word is only found in Acts 26:5 , "after the straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee." Colossians 2:18 , "worshipping of angels."

What is true religion?

Fake bank notes are becoming more popular. Isn't it annoying when we try to purchase something only to find the bank note is of no value. Yet who can we blame ? - is it not our own responsibility to check the bank notes when we accept them, - certainly more and more retailers are using Counterfeit pens and machines to detect fake bank notes.

The point is there are True notes worth the face value, and they are fake notes that are worth nothing. - The fake notes are hard to detect, for they are a very good likeness, and yet isn't it the same with false religion?

Yes, false religion is becoming more and more popular, and while it claims to have a face value, - the true worthlessness of it is hidden. Also it is hard to detect, for it is a good likeness, - and hard to detect for many people.

Like at Romans 6:7 says Romans 6:7

King James Version (KJV)

7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

So when we die we have been acquitted of any sin, so if a blackboard recorded all your sins, it is wiped clean when you die, so how can you go to a place called hell and suffer eternal torment, it has to be a false teaching.

Would you agree?

What is true religion that is a very good question.
