  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The doctrine of the Trinity is a theological frame through which folks seek to harmonize disparate truths scattered throughout the New Testament. When people say they do not beleive in the Trintity, therefore, their problem really does not lie in the doctrine of the Trinity itself but rather with one or more of the doctrine's underlying truths.

The seven Biblical propostional truths about God the doctrine of the Trinity seeks to harmonize are:

1. There is one God.
2. The Father, He is God.
3. The Son, He is God.
4. The Holy Spirit, He is God.
5. The Father is not the Son or the Holy Spirit
6. The Son is not the Father or the Holy Spirit.
7. The Holy Spirit is is not the Father or the Son.

Using more biblical terminology these truths can be restated as:

1. There is one God.
2. The Father, He is God.
3. The Son, He is God.
4. The Holy Spirit, He is God.
5. The Son is sent by the Father.
6. The Holy Spirit is sent by both the Father and the Son.
7. The Father is sent by no one.

The Trinity doctrine is merely an interpretive lens through which we view these seven biblical truths in an effort to hold them all simultaneously true, as we should.

However, it is more helpful, when helping someone who does not like the doctrine, to determine which of these seven truths are the real obstacles for them. In this way we can steer clear of theological arguments and focus on the heart of the matter.

No problem. I actually believe we can help people think through this to a change of mind. Too many wish to cross swords on this issue, and I don't think that works. I've got to believe with prayer patience, and respectful reasoning from scripture, we can help some people see these truths.
