In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Sorry, I just have to brag...

For about a month my son has been using the potty to do number one. He doesn't say he needs to yet, and if I don't offer he is still content to use his diaper. Tonight, though, he did a poopy on the potty!!!

I cried I was so proud. I know, I am weird. I thought for a second of taking a picture of it!

Anyway, now that he has done it, I am ready to start really working on doing his business in the toilet every time. What do you guys recommend for protection during potty training? Do pull-ups really hold enough for overnight? Plus, I have heard they lengthen teh training process. Any thoughts?

I wish I knew, E-Beth! I'm not quite there yet, as you know, since I'm a NEW daddy.

Maybe I can help on something else someday!

Thanks for your support and encouragement on my question/thread.
You're a sweetheart.

good luck with it, and God bless you! (I liked your inclination to take a photo! :D )

Look, I would probably stick to a nappy overnight, unless he starts to wake up dry on a regular basis. You would probably be best to skip pull ups, most kids treat them like a nappy and they do delay the process. Go for underpants, and at least he can feel that they are uncomfortable when they are wet and next time he will try and get to the toilet.

I have not successfully potty trained my son yet. but I have spent a lot of time in child care centres and know of other parents experiences.

Pull-ups worked for us. Once we we thought he was just about trained we quit using them at home and then gradually moved to not using them at all. Some kids need to feel that uncomfortable feeling of having wet pants while others don't. Unfortunately I don't think there is one thing that works for every child. You kinda just have to figure out what works for your son. We first tried training our son at 2 1/2, but it was awful because he wasn't ready. When we tried again at 3 it was easy. Our younger son is 2 yrs. 2 mos. and he has already showed interest and has used the potty a couple times. We used the pull-ups at night and never had a problem with them not being absorbant enough. Sorry I wasn't a lot of help. Good luck!

Hey, congratulations to you both! You can go ahead and brag! Did you ever think the day would come when diapers were a thing of the past?

I'm sure it's different for every kid but we only used Pull-ups for when we were away from the house. Especially for going to church or wherever it would be difficult to deal with an accident. At home it was only cloth pants. There was something about that warm trickle down the leg that was a huge motivator for my kids! Even for naptime and bedtime we used cloth and just stocked up on an extra mattress pad (waterproof) and sheets. My son never once wet the bed and my daughter did one time. They also never went in their Pull-ups.

We trained our oldest daughter, who is now 4, in underwear. She started when she was 3 and it took awhile. When she was about
3 1/2 she said "No diaper tonight". We were a little worried when we put her to bed that night but she kept the bed sheets dry. Now we are training our second daughter, she is 2 1/2, in underwear and the occasional pull-up. Now that we have run out of pull-ups, she is training completey in underwear during the day, even during outings, and a diaper at night and naptime. Sometimes she used to cry if the flowers on the pull-ups would disappear when they got wet. I find that potty training in underwear works best. You just have to keep them playing close to the potty and have cleaner and a rag handy incase of accidents. Good Luck.

I always just go for it, in full undies, and with the understanding that I will be cleaning up some messes as we go. :)

I only use training pants for when we leave the house (because them having an accident in the middle of the grocery store is NOT my cup of tea--ask me how I know!)... *grin*

Well, I take that back. One of mine (now 4, and still doing it) wets when she sleeps (guess she's a deep sleeper!), so she wears pull-ups at bedtime. Poor thing--she hates it, but we just don't make a big deal out of it and I tell her that her body will grow out of it sometime, and until them, it's no problem at all.

By the way, I start as soon as they are capable of following basic instructions and comprehending the whole potty phenomenon. So both my girls have been trained right before they turned 2, and my son (I did him a little later, since I'd just had a baby right before he turned 2!) we trained when he was a few months over 2.

We make it FUN, and happy, and give lots of treats out those first couple days. :) And yeah--the first couple days are FULL of accidents...but that's how they get the hang of it, and within a week or two, they're usually completely trained. I like that approach better than slowly dragging it out. But to each their own! *grin*

Blessings,
Molly

Unless you give your munchin lots to drink before bed pull-ups should be tough enough to handle nighttime accidents. :) I, personally, don't like what happens with poo-poo accidents in them, but that's my thing. My daughter must just have funky poo that loves to find her pants through the leg holes. But, this is something that we deal with because diapers are pretty inconvenient for the ups and downs of bathroom breaks.

Pull-ups are good for overnight. Like Jenna said, unless they've really had A LOT to drink before bed, they shouldn't leak at all.

I have a 6 year old (just turned) who wore Pull-Ups to bed until about 6 months ago (a few months before kindergarten started). Like Molly's daughter, she's a pretty deep sleeper and she just wouldn't wake up when she had to go. She really WANTED to go and she'd get really very upset when she'd wake up to a wet bed. Pull-ups helped her deal with her emotions over the whole thing. Usually she'd throw the wet ones away in the morning and slip on regular panties without telling me about it. I think it helped her to know that it wasn't something she had to share with the whole family if she didn't want to (she gets embarrassed very easily and is pretty sensitive). And she was very pro-active about the whole thing...she'd tell me how she was really going to MAKE herself wake up if she had to go. I just encouraged her, but of course, she just had to wait for her body to catch up to her.

So, yes, Pull-ups work for overnight. :) Depending on the child, they can slow down training. But Pampers have those new Feel and Learn training pants...supposedly they don't leak, yet still let them feel wet. I've never tried those, but it sounds promising. :) Good luck.

My kids are 2 and 3. My daughter(3) was trained at about 2 for BMs and 2 1/2 for pee. She still has the occasional pee accident, but we stick with underwear and carry on after the mess is cleaned up. My son is 27 months and has been trained for about a month now. Eleanor took a couple of weeks of accidents, and Thomas was less than a day! Every child is different, but I really believe that pullups hinder the process more some. We started Eleanor with pullups and switched after realizing she didn't appreciate the difference between that and a diaper. Thomas was right into underwear and did amazingly after just that first day. My kids are 11 months apart so diaper free during the day is wonderful. The hardest thing we are finding is that Eleanor is still in a pullup at bedtime and Thomas isn't! He has wet the bed twice in the last month but other than that has been waking to pee at night. We just deal with it the same as other moms have mentioned... her body isn't ready to hold that much pee for that long yet. She gets that and it makes sense because even though he is younger Thomas is bigger. Do what works for your family though, and pullups for a while aren't that big a deal. My advice on underwear though, buy twice as many as you think you will need ;) .

I found that pull ups were good at night (easy to get on and off) but they do feel just like a diaper.
For my son we did the real thick underwear with plastic pants over them. This way he could tell (and did not like) when he was wet, but his clothes were protected (less laundry).
