What is tradition?

If you do something twice, does it become a tradition?

Is tradition always a good thing, or can it become an hinderance or burden?

Jesus had nothing good to say about traditions in the NT.

Since Adam in the Garden, men have not trusted in the simple teachings of scripture. Paul's reference to "tradition" is a past tense reference to doctrines already taught (cp. Gal 1:6-12). Tradition has always been the enemy of scripture. It was the enemy of Christ.

I tend to believe that tradition is a good thing as long as it doesn't lead you away from CHRIST. When we become involved with tradition it is very easy to trust in that tradition and forget about what its all about. And it's all about CHRIST!

1 Cor 11:2 - "Now I praise you because you rememebr me in everything and hold firmly to the traditions, just as i have delivered them to you."

2 Thess 2:15 - "So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us".

2 Thess 3:6 - "Now we command you, brethren, inthe name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from every brother who leads an unruly life and not according to the tradition which you recieved from us".

Col 2:8 - Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elemental forces of the world, and not based on Christ.

Mark 7:6 But He said to them,
"Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. 7 They worship Me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commands of men. 8 Disregarding the commandment of God, you keep the tradition of men." 9 He also said to them, "You splendidly disregard God's commandment, so that you may maintain your tradition!"

So it seems from Scripture there are ungodly, God-dishonouring traditions - but there are also gody, holy, apostolic, and God-honouring traditions that we ought to grasp and hold to. Thank you for pointing that out! It is a valid point.

Actually He quoted from tradition every time He quoted from the Hebrew Scriptures. It is very clear that Jesus treated tradition as authoritative.

Also, how do you Baptist folk define tradition? (Because I suspect it is different from some expressions of Christianity.)

DRAT! This was supposes to be a new thread. Is there a mod in the house who can move it? thanks.

I recently ran into a gentleman who claimed that Jesus was crucified on Wednesday, not Friday. He is Baptist (Highland Park of Chattanooga, TN). He said his church does not observe Good Friday, because there's not enough time for three, literal, 24 hour days in the tomb.

Is this a universal Baptist thought?

Tradition and custom are dangerous for me. My personality either tends to do them by rote, and they lose their meaning, or I over-analyze them and take out only those things that have meaning, tossing all the rest. So, I personally don't like traditions. That's why I like communion on the first Sunday of each month, not too frequent to lose it's meaning, not to infrequent to lose it's "effect".

Peter, I think I know where that Wednesday comes from. I'll look for the thread once you get it started.

I personally love tradition - as it is the manifestation and life of the Holy Spirit in the Church. My frivelous opinions and fads and tastes take a backseat to Tradition. I see my role as being conformed to the CHurch, not the Church conforming to me and my whims.

That's just it, we don't follow an organization, we follow Christ. As for whims, I'll assume that only refers to you.
