  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I just want to welcome both of you newbies to the board. Note that I used the term "newbie" and not "newfie". In a way I'm kind of new to the board. I used to be a regular. Then I disappeared for a few years. Now I'm visiting again.

It is true Scarborough was amalgamated with the City of Toronto (see link). But it isn't unusal for residents to distinguish between the two areas at least to get around by car. To be really specific however, I'm from an area of Toronto called Cabbage Town.

Just an aside here - Please remember to back up anything wikipedia says with other sources. Wikipedia is not an 100% reliable source as it can be added to by anyone.

The difference between Cabbage Town (Cabbagetown) and Scarborough is that Scarborough was an actual city and Cabbage Town was not - it's just a nickname for the area you live, which Scarborough has now become.

I used to live in a part of Scarborough, known as Agincourt. Agincourt used to be a city which was amalgamated by Scarborugh. Some people still refer to the area as Agincourt (mostly as a way to stay what area they live in of Scarborough), but the post office still recognizes it, although they prefer the use of Toronto.

My oldest daughter was born the first year of amalgamation and all her information says Toronto, even a note signed by Mayor Mel Lastman (the first mayor of the amalgamated city and former mayor of North York - also amalgamated).

Just a little added history. :)

I wonder how many times I used the word (or variation) of amalgamated. ^_^

i used to live in Cabbagetown for three months back in 1991. nice neighbourhood but too close to regent park. Anyone know Winchester P.S. or Lord Dufferin P.S. ?

As for Agincourt, I used to go to school up there too.
There was a band in the 70's called Ocean who recorded a lot of Christian songs and had a hit called "put your hand in the hand" and another with "one more chance" they originated out of Agincourt as well

I personally reside in West (Worst) Hill

they demolished it?! it was such a nice school (even though I was only there for two weeks and I got lost on the first day). I miss the teacher I had. That really sucks. That is just one thing I really dislike about Toronto, no regard for historic architecture.

I was surprised too when my streetcar was diverted, I looked outside and couldn't find the school. If I have a chance I'll take a picture of the school yard. There were many more portables. I only saw the facade of the main entrance standing. The building once behind it seemed to be missing. I don't know if this was an elaborate optical illusion or what.

I guess the pencil pusher who approved the action thought, it's just a bunch of poor people who use this building. How can it be a historical building if poor people use it.

I remember passing by it on a streetcar as well and I tried looking for it as the back faced Parliament St. I couldn't see it. Is that old wooden jungle gym still there? They must have torn that down as well. From what i remembered a lot of kids went to that school and this was in 1991. I don't remember any portables there when I was there though. I guess they thought the same about that old Scarborough Village school too. That school was on Eglinton Av. East at Markham. it was probably one of the few old historic schools in Toronto left. Built in 1913, heartlessly demolished to bits in 1999. Nothing stands in its place. So much for redevelopment.
