What do yall think about praying in tongues while doing things completely unrelated to God? Like listening to music, watching TV(I try not to watch TV), reading secular news or something. I think it's good to pray in tongues while you read the bible, christian literature, and walk around outside, but am unsure of other things. Does it diminish the affect? I mean we still need to spend some time praying in tongues deeply, but for edification.

When you are praying (whether in tongues or not), why would you be watching TV or reading the news? Wouldn't that be dividing your attention? If you have worship music playing, then you are focused on God through the worship. If you are reading the Bible, then you are focused on God through His Word. If you are reading Christian Literature your mind MIGHT be focused on Him through the book, or it might be on the book you are reading (in the case of fiction).

When we are praying, we need to pray in Spirit and in Truth. Anything that could distract us from that, we should put away when we pray. There are times we can't put away all distractions, but we should reduce them as much as possible. This will allow us to pray and to listen to God's still small voice. This applies whether we are speaking in our prayer tongue or not. (Obviously the prayer language being preferred ;))

I have found may uses for tongues in my life.
During times of temptation I find tongues releases it.
During times of attack from satan I find tongues is a form of resistance.
When old sins grieve my soul, tongues brings a release.
When old sorrows and pains come up, tongues heals and brings peace.
Yes... I find I pray in tongues more than I speak in my birth tongue.

I couldn't vote because none of the choices really apply to me personally.

Number one was the closest, but since the primary question was "all the time?", I felt voting for that combo of "all the time while doing anything" didn't obtain in my case.

"At any given time, while doing just about anything" would have received my vote. :)

Well bible says that the mind isn't fruitful so I'd say it really doesn't matter what we are doing while praying in tounges. I pray in tounges as often as I think of it and I'm going for all the time when not talking to other people. It's our spirit that prays anyway so I don't think that he can be distracted by whatever we are doing. What I found nevertheless is that when I'm praying in tounges and be quiet before god and concentrate on him it refreshes my soul and body which does not yet work for me as well while driving for instance or doing other things. Therefore I still like to sit down in a comfortable chair and pray in tounges

I pray in tongues whilst doing most things - though I think whilst watching television may be a little hard!
But - what is a 'God-related activity'?
If any of my activities are not God related, why am I doing them??
Certainly I pray and listen to worship music whilst driving, doing housework, gardening, etc.
And I do pray in tongues whilst reading the news - there are so many things needing prayer!

But it is still important to make time to be alone with God without distractions to concentrate on prayer.

I voted for...........

While doing anything.

I quite often pray whilst washing up or driving the car(just don't close your eyes) so yes its possible to pray doing other things as well, I wouldn't say watching telly would be a good place, unless of course its the God Channel.

I don't think that anything is completely unrelated to God. Everything is spiritual and we should practice our spiritual gifts in all things.
:amen:

And thanks to TPFKAD for taking it a lil deeper....

We are to do all things as unto God..... and if we are praying in tongues, we are more prone to be spirit-controlled in what we are doing.

and as for JAS4Yeshua's question - "When you are praying (whether in tongues or not), why would you be watching TV or reading the news? Wouldn't that be dividing your attention?"

I must say that the Bible says when we pray in the spirit our minds are unfruitful - so it's possible to be praying in the spirit while our minds are occupied with something else......

What an interesting question!
I pray most of the time ( I wont say ALL the time, I'll be honest) in tongues while I am working, sitting, driving....Dont know about reading. That would be quite an exercise! lol! I seem to do my best praying while I am doing physical work, like washing dishes, mowing the lawn, working in the laundry (which is my job, by the way) It would seem that doing physical activity frees up my mind and enables it to talk to God in a deeper way than just sitting still.
I do get into a quiet place and listen to Him, but He often speaks to me while I am moving, too. So go figure! He will move as He wills, and we are to pray and give thanks in all things, all the time. Reading now, I'm gonna have to try that. Thats a new one!

I first have to admit that I am not one to go off - kneel down, get my Bible out and pray - Jesus is with me all the time and I talk off and on all the time with Him - not constantly, but in all occasions.

Yes I pray when watching TV - I am a news junkie and there is so much that needs prayer that I constantly call for covering for different things.

There are times when I don't pray over meals - but I live a life of thankfulness at all times - I thank God for my Blessings all the time. I guess I am just not a very diciplined person - I can pray all day long off and on - but to go kneel down and alone - my prayers are not so long.

I walk each day with a mental picture of my hand in the hand of Jesus and I just talk and pray as a friend all the time.

I think the poll portion of this thread doesn't really convey the right answers, IMO. ;)

While it might be possible to do so, why would you do so? Wouldn't it be better to give God our full attention during prayer? Doesn't He deserve no less?

Yes, I pray while driving, or doing chores. I don't see a problem with doing so. We should always be talking to God. But when watching television or a movie, or something along those lines? Considering most modern entertainment has no focus on God and some can be blasphemous to God, how can we be partaking in the world and praying to God at the same time. The world and the spirit do not mix well.

I'm not saying we shouldn't pray at all times, nor am I saying we shouldn't be watching modern entertainment. (That is a subject for another thread. ;)) I am saying thta when we do pray, we should give God as much attention as we can.

JAS, if I were to stop what I'm doing to "give God my full attention" when I pray, I would never get anything done! I do agree with you, though, that the world and the spirit do not mix well. Often I have been praying for someone or ministering to them online while hubby is watching some TV program, and it is very difficult to give my prayer the focus that I need to give it - all the more reason to pray in the spirit, IMHO.....

Notice I wrote in my post that we should be talking to God all the time. Even I pray while driving or doing chores. My main comments have always focused on when we are trying to watch TV or the like and trying to pray at the same time. In addition, I stated we should also give time to fully devote to God, instead of dividing our time. ;)

I agree - but as a wife I cannot tell my husband what to do...... I don't agree with some things that he watches on TV, and it's difficult spiritually - it does divide my concentration - and the least I can do is pray in the spirit.....

What you are describing is a little different from what I'm describing. I'm talking about when a person is actively engaged in watching TV or the like. Not when someone is distracted from someone else's activities. Best we can do in those situations is what you do, or, if possible, go into another room to get silence to pray.

So jas are you saying that its wrong to be un-god-focused while you pray in the spirit? That its wrong to do un-christian things and speak in tongues at the same time? Suppose someone prays in the spirit 10 hours a day, then goes home and watches TV for an hour (even though he would be so jacked up on the spirit, he wouldnt watch tv), Would it be wrong for him to pray in the spirit while hes watching television?

Of course watching television's not good for him anyways, but what would be the ramifications of doing both at the same time? Thats what i meant.

No, I never said it was wrong. Let me try to give an example, so that you might better understand.

Say you had a friend on the phone. You probably wouldn't have any problems focusing on the conversation while doing chores or the like, correct? But what about if you are watching TV at the same time? Your attention will be divided between what your friend is saying and what you are watching on television.

It isn't a matter of right or wrong in this situation, just what is better. It is better t be completely focused on the Lord when praying, in order to speak to and to hear from Him.

Is it always possible? No, but there are times when it is possible, yet we don't make an effort to do so. We might say we are too busy, so we try to do both at the same time. Not saying it is wrong, but that we should evaluate between ourselves and the Lord where we are really focusing our time, and on what.

BUSY

Being
Under
Satan's
Yoke

A little acronymn I try to keep in mind when I think I get too busy for things of God.
