Tongues: advice needed.

I want to pray in tongues somehow I don't think I'm good enough How will I know whether it's the Holy Spirit or me if it happens?

I guess I'm a bit mixed up and confused on this one and would appreciate advice Bible verses and prayers.

The Bible says that we don't even know what to pray for so the Holy Spirit will interceed with our spirit to pray for us (tongues of angles).
When I received the gift, my pastor had told me to worship God just because he is God. It was at this time that I realized that I had never truely worshipped Him before. I had only thanked Him for health, blessings, my wonderful wife and child, ect.. but never truely worshipped Him just because He is God and that is enough reason to fall in love with Him and worship with all my soul and might. i then started really seeking Him and asking God to Baptise me with His Holy Spirit. I went on a fast for sanctification. When I went back to church and started to worship with others that is when it happened. Itwas awesome. Such joy, peace and power. The Bible says that we will be endued with power after we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. These last 3 years have been awesome. I have grown so much in the Lord. It is almost as good if not better to see someone you have been praying for receive as it was for me.
Bottom line is to praise God because the Bible says that God inhabits our praise. That is the closest you will get to God is when you are praising Him in that heavenly language. I will pray for you to receive. God Bless and have a great day.

Laura - The humility of your post touched me.

I'm sure you already know "good enough" has nothing to do with it.
Do you have a friend or prayer partner who prays in tongues? I would encourage you to pray with one of them. Just pray. Pray and ask the Lord what He would have for you. You may be pleasantly surprised.

I would love to hear from you - to be kept up to date on what He shows you.

1 Corinthians 14Paul makes several points about speaking in tongues: (1) It is a spiritual gift from God (14:2); (2) it is a desirable gift even though it isn’t a requirement of faith (12:28-31); (3) it is less important than prophecy and teaching (14:4). Although Paul himself spoke in tongues, he stresses prophecy (preaching) because it benefits the whole church, while speaking in tongues primarily benefits the speaker. Public worship must be understandable and edifying to the whole church

MsAnne, yes I know that I am 'good enough' in God's eyes but not in my own. This I think stems from a very long period of depression and emotional problems which 'praise God' I have worked through, I have been healed and am pretty good now but there are some things like self-worth that satan still attacks. I don't have a friend now who prays in tongues as alot of people could not cope with me when I was ill and backed away from me. I went to a traditional church where if you raised your arm in worship you would be frowned upon.
I have at last found be a great church but as yet don't know anyone well enough to share with them. I will keep you posted as to my progress.

Alabare, Your story is great. when I went to church yesterday I tried to just worship God because He is God but I think I have a way to go yet. I need to stop worrying what others around me think and let go and make my worship just between God and I. I wonder if you could explain your fast for sanctification to me as I have missed out on this while I've been sitting in the pews with the old ladies.

I pray that God will give me the gifts he wants me to have but praying in tongues is a gift I long for.

God has been good to me but it has taken a long time to get to where I am now. If I could ask for you prayers.
