Proverbs 3: 31 Do not envy the violent or choose any of their ways. (NIV)
In football, we see the hard hits, but those don’t entice us. We don’t want to emulate those. That would hurt. There is a violence we see in sports that we like though and we sometimes want to choose those ways. We see the coach who is constantly yelling and screaming . The coach who is always a little out of control. And we think, “Wow, if I were just like him, I would be successful too.” Not true. Tony Dungy said it best in his book, “Quiet Strength,” “There is never anything good that comes from losing your temper.” We see coaches rant and rave, and think that is the key to their success, but that is not the case. In fact, the coaches who constantly display their anger are the ones who end up out of a job very quickly. In football, there may be a time to strongly encourage players, but good coaches get control of that quickly before too much damage is done. Then there are the Will Muschamp’s of the world, who at Florida, seemed to be constantly yelling at someone. You can’t make progress when you are constantly yelling, berating and tearing down. God calls us to build up and encourage. You can’t build up with a violent tongue.
