  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

To adblock or not.

Not sure if this would count here, but something thats been heating up more and more, websites get more and more anti ad block, wich just causes more people to use adblock. And it's a weird situation where the people angry about adblock creatd the need for it.

For me I use adblock and it's ilk for a few reasons.

1) More and more websites are becoming monstrosities of ad's where it's even effecting performance on the page, especially the number of websites that have auto play ads, that like to bug and you hear the ad but can't find it to remove.

2. Viruses and ransom ware, I remember some majour web sites had ransome ware put on some of them last year I think it was, the sites don't control the ads so your playing a bit of roulette.

I'm willing to take adblock off if there were not so many issues, but I always feel like I'm playing roulette every time I take it off.

Though alot of websites are getting rather obnoxious about being anti adblock to the point where it's not worth going to them.

What are your thoughts on the situation?

I'm not really sure why adblock is different from theft. You lose no money and little time from ads, and you gain much in comparison.

I don't think virus' are a big problem... you should hand virus software.

I'd say those using adblock are worse than software pirates. It's immoral, theft, and you lose almost nothing from keeping the rules.

Since I installed an adblocker, a week or so ago, certain sites (mentioning no names) load pages much more quickly than they used to - saving me as much as 20 minutes per morning (sites I visit at start of day now takes 30 minutes - used to take 50)

Thankfully, it's not illegal to speed up your computer by blocking ads you have no interest in seeing.

This is a little shortsighted so far as viruses are concerned. People are constantly creating new ways to attack computers. Anti-virus software is only as good as its existing capability and has to constantly adapt and evolve to face new threats that are produced and deployed daily.

Oh yeah, I also hate websites that try to blackmail you into removing adblock, like forbes that won't let you in, or other websites that ruin your ability to use the website effectivly and such.
I was just going to mention them. I simply stopped trying to access pages there. They simply won't even get web traffic from me if they insist I disable adblock.

The best way to avoid viruses is to limit exposure. Your second paragraph in that quote is laughably hyperbolic.

oh wahhh, the websites created adblock, and it's their fault, most websites that complain about adblock the most are also the most argregious for the stupid amount of ads they have, or the most annoying.

I get they want revenue, but I don't like my computer slowing down or having problems on it.

I never needed nor wanted anything like adblock for years, but about the time adblock showed up was about the time going to websites wasn't really worth it without it.

worst example I remember was going to that guy with glasses website at my sisters, they had put up their videos on a site that made you wait 30 seconds to see the video if you have adblock, well she didn't and watching 10 videos I had to sit through the same 20 second annoying unkippable boring as heck comercial every time. Places like youtube, the videos are often unskippable and stupid it's the same on alot of sites.

How many sites like I said have auto play videos that often bug so you hear but can't find to turn off, OR auto turn back on after you turn them off multiple times.

I would remove adblock from my computer if most sites actually made removing it worth it or not a headache.

Oh wahh... humans use money rather than theft. I'm not saying I'm perfect, but ads are such a minor problem than avoidance cant be justified.

the websites created adblock, and it's their fault,

The websites? The god of all websites?

most websites that complain about adblock the most are also the most argregious for the stupid amount of ads they have, or the most annoying.

I get they want revenue, but I don't like my computer slowing down or having problems on it.

Sounds more like you have a slow computer or slow internet.

I never needed nor wanted anything like adblock for years, but about the time adblock showed up was about the time going to websites wasn't really worth it without it.

Again, seems like you might need a better computer or internet speed. If you can't afford that, then I understand your use.

worst example I remember was going to that guy with glasses website at my sisters, they had put up their videos on a site that made you wait 30 seconds to see the video if you have adblock, well she didn't and watching 10 videos I had to sit through the same 20 second annoying unkippable boring as heck comercial every time. Places like youtube, the videos are often unskippable and stupid it's the same on alot of sites.

Most places don't make you watch 10 of the same video in a row, and watching an advert on youtube is entirely reasonable. It's annoying, but on principle I understand.

How many sites like I said have auto play videos that often bug so you hear but can't find to turn off, OR auto turn back on after you turn them off multiple times.

Very few, but I agree i's annoying. But I'm not going to mess with everyone else because of that.

Buy anti-virus software. The risk isn't that great.

Do you not drive or cross the road because you might be hit by a car?

Your second paragraph in that quote is laughably hyperbolic.

How so?

Ads are what allow a relatively free of charge internet. If there weren't ads you would get less services for free. Your adblock helps you because you are a parasite off others. If other did the same as you it wouldn't work. And that's okay, if you don't have the money... I'm just saying in general.

I recently found out to my regret that an ad blocker program can work in such a way as to cancel out your anti-virus security program and allow a wholesale invasion that will thoroughly gum up your computer and actually bring it to a dead stop.

One wonders if fast-forwarding through commercials is immoral, too. (Can you tell I don't own a DVR?)

to be fair, they actually tried to make it a crime, or something like that, I know they fought against DVR's that wouldn't record comercials and I beleive they also tried to make them unfastorwardable. hmmmm I think there was more, but found this with a quick google search.

Fox Broadcasting Co. v. Dish Network, LLC - Wikipedia

I think the entire idea of ads as a revenue for money is imoral, your basicly trying to sell people stuff they likly don't want or need, and repeatedly poking them with it. It reminds me of spam emails for porn, it's like, "I'm not interested in porn, and I'm definetly not going to use porn from a email even if I was." same with ads, if I want to buy that HDTV I'm going to go to bestbuy, futureshop, heck even my local walmart to see what they sell and have, not click on some random ad on a random site, that may or may not be legit.

On the PC, I use ad blocking, but I typically whitelist websites that I use regularly, if they don't show any ads that are malicious or interfere with web browsing. For example, I have CF whitelisted.

On my phone, I recently switched to a web browser with ad blocking, and the difference in speed is really noticeable, even though my phone is quite good.

using adblock isn't theft lol..
I agree. It's no more theft than leaving the room to go do something when a commercial comes on the television.
