I think a major key to these island mysteries is the huge "timewarp" reveal from episode 4x03.

Let's talk about the different ways time is used that might give a clue to some of the goings on!

Take Dan, the physics basketcase and his experiment...
On http://losteastereggs.blogspot.com one guy worded it well: (paraphrased from this post's comments)

We can assume when the rocket was launched, both watches (Dan's and the Ship's) were synced at zero.
Relative to the ship, the rocket took 15 seconds to reach the target.
Relative to the island, the rocket took 2:45:03.
Relative to the rocket, it took 3:16:22.

Something is definitely happening to objects and people as they try to come to the island. Perhaps the rocket went into another time line or dimension on its way in? Kind of like Back to the Future when Einstein 's clock is a certain time behind the Doc's after Einstein travels in time?

Desmond:
Desmond becoming "future guy" when the magnetic charge was released from the island.
Is he really able to see the future? Are there more timelines going on? Did he travel through time?

From the teaser training video
Two #15 rabits who can't touch! Why? Was the "set at 20" spoken by the female on the video talking about setting the rabit back or forward in time by 20 minutes? d this create a duplicate? Would the space-time continuum (*totally in a Back to the Future mode right now!*) break if they touched each other? What do they study in the Orchid related to Time?
Is this what happened with the plane they found in the ocean? When the plane crashed, was a duplicate created? If so, wouldn't the pilot be the same guy, just in another place?

what other ways does Time play in?

These are all great thoughts. I've been thinking time travel ever since Desmond's flashback story, and I think last night's episode strengthens the theory. It would make total sense, too, in a Team Darlton kind of way, incorporating the entire show into flashbacks in time, and flashforwards in time.

So in one iteration of time, Desmond joined the army, went to jail, and had one picture taken of him and Penny. In another, he went to college, walked past the army sign, and two pictures were taken (one he had, and one Naomi somehow had).

In one iteration of time, Flight 815 crashed on the ocean floor and was found with no survivors. In another, they crashed on the island and 6 people were rescued.

Richard doesn't age, from when Ben was a child to the present time, he is the same age.... why? Because time slows down when you get to the island?

Juliet was shown the uterus of a woman she thought was in her 70's, but it really belonged to a woman in her 20's (thereabouts, the exact ages might not be accurate to my memory). Another time/flash-forward reference.

Through the Looking Glass, and C.S. Lewis, and I think this is going to be a very interesting theory to follow as the seasons progress to the end-point!

If one watch was 2:45 and one was 3:15 (approximately), then time moves forward roughly 20% faster. They've therefore been on the island for 122 days, not 100.

15 seconds vs 2:45 would mean that they basically get off the island to alcoholic robots and suicide booths.

My thoughts after last night's episode are that Einstein's theory of relativity is coming into play here. According to that theory (in part, and as I understand it), time is bent (warped, curved) by gravity. Time flows differently in space than it does around a large mass (i.e. a planet or star).

So.... the magnetic field generated by the island would change the pull of gravity and thus warp time in the vicinity of the island.

Could explain some strange occurrences in the space-time continuum.

well that 31 minute difference is crazy for sure, but why does the boat think it took 15 seconds when it actually took hours? that's even more weird to me than a 31 minute time difference, kwim?

I agree that all of this is viable - the problem I have is that I can't imagine Lost's creators would expect all their viewers to go learn physics in order to understand the show.

They don't. Just like they don't expect all their viewers to catch the references to philosophers, scientists, etc, that they keep throwing in.

Doesn't mean they didn't hope some people would catch it.

Besides, if they explain it (later), then they're not expecting us to know it.

Then there were three pictures because Desmond had one with him, Penny had one on her night stand and Naomi had one with her.
