  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I cannot speak for Catholicism, but in all the liturgies I've seen, from Methodism to the Eucharistic Prayer of St. John Chrysostom, that passage is part of a concluding doxology of praise to God at the end of the "Canon of the Mass"/Prayer of Consecration. As such, it is duly said by the Priest, with the laity echoing their "Amen" that the Priest's prayer represents their prayer as well -- but is not something solely appertaining to the priestly function but rather an act of praise which, if there are not church-specific rules, the congregation may well join in praying with him, at least sotto voce. I know in the Episcopal Church, if there is a concelebrated Eucharist, the priests sharing in the Eucharistic Prayer will join together in praying aloud that concluding doxology.

In other words, follow the rules of the church -- but it's not theologically in error to join in it. I often do, subvocalizing the passage as the priest prays it aloud.
