1. Character cannot be developed in ease in quiet.
2. We would never learn to be brave
3.It seemed intended by the blessed providence of God that I should be blind all my life, and I thank him for the dispensation. If perfect earthly sight were offered me tomorrow I would not accept it. I might not have sung hymns to the praise of God if I had been distracted by the beautiful and interesting things about me.
4. When we do the best we can, we never know what miracle is wrought in our life, or in the life of another.
The quotes above are attributed to an author and a songwriter. Hellen Keller (author) and Fanny Crosby (songwriter) were "robbed" of one of their five senses, that of sight, but they nurtured a replacement sense, that of artistry. I find it amazing that two of the most influential and inspirational people in the world were blind. In a world of permanent darkness they still managed to grasp a glimpse of what God is all about. You can find their works and songs in many churches on from various source on the web.
Edmund Budd was a man who I considered a second father. Although not born blind I only ever knew him as so. He was very influential in my learning of scripture and what God was really about. Many of his words of wisdom (and discipline!!) still sound in my ears to this day. He had a profound sense of awe and respect for God and although unable to see had an amazing memory for scripture, not just as words but as something colourful with great meaning and purpose. When he passed away a couple years ago the one song that kept me positive through my time of sadness was Blessed Assurance.
It was amazing when I realised later that the writer of this song was the same said Fanny Crosby.
Through heaven's eyes those who could not physically see still had a vision of what God wanted of them and in turn have influenced and inspired so many. Often in our quiet meditations and our private moments of prayer we should ask God to allow us to experience this same kind of hope, trust and faith in things yet unseen.
Dear God, we thank you for all your gifts. True faith is based on totally depending on you and trusting you even though we may not see it yet. In a world that guarantees nothing for the future, we depend on our faith in you which guarantees everything. Thank you so much for faith. In Jesus name. Amen
