Thread Crochet?

Does anyone else out there like to do thread crochet--sometimes called "white crochet?" I crochet, and collect old patterns, some from as early as the 1700s.

I LOVE thread crocheting! It is soo fun. I've done umm ... a bunch of doilies so far, just with pattern books from WalMart. I don't usually use white though... right now I'm working on a green one. And I've done several with different colored flowers worked into them.. It's my favorite hobby right now! What kind do you do??

I crochet with all kinds and sizes and colors of thread...but haven't done so in months due to a lack of time. But I'll get back to it. I do doilies mostly.

I've wanted to do that so bad! But I'm having a hard time with working in the round, so making doilies and what not isn't going so well, heh.

I bought a bunch of small hooks and a book about making doilies, but I think I bought the wrong kind of thread...it came out too bulky. Exactly what kind are you supposed to use?

I enjoy making thread crochet items. I've done more name doilies than regular doilies. I tend to crochet a bit looser with the thread than with yarn, so I can't really do much for clothing when it comes, especially baby items. Poor babies aren't babies any more by the time they can wear them.

Size 10 thread is typical. It's in more of a "spool" type than a skein or a cone. Aunt Lydias is a common brand that I can think of on the top of my head. There are also smaller sizes, 20, 30 and 40 for the even finer steel hooks.

Yep, size 10 is what I use too! It's really more like a thick thread than a yarn. The packages should have the number on them.

Patterns don't have to be round! Filet crochet is beautiful, and can be done in any shape imaginable. It's easy to read too, as it is charted.

Here is a link where you can get free patterns on the net. I recently did the eagle, and it turned out to be gorgeous.

I have been doing thread crochet since I was about 11 years old. My mother side of the family is from Italy. They all thread crochet. When my Grandmother's sister was alive we all used to do to her house on a Saturday in the dinning room to drink coffee and crochet or knit. The older ones would teach the younger ones different stitches. The best was when someone was getting married. Because we would get together for thread crochet along table cloth or bedspread.

when my mom was alive she used to make beautiful doilies and table clothes her one pattern came from the Netherlands and it is written in Dutch and is very old and woren out. She has made one for my sister and me and to her grandkids.

I love working with thread, and not just doilies! I make bookmarks, wallhangings in filet, dainty edgings for Irish linen hankies (size 30 thread on a 12 hook!) At the moment I have 5 thread pieces drying on the table--I'm trying to get them blocked to "just" the right shape. 4 are filet pieces and one is a doily in size 20 thread. It has angels around it.

Decorative Crochet and Crochet Magic are 2 magazines that are almost all thread patterns. They are done in symbol crochet, but there are instructions in the back for figuring out how to read the charts.

I have tons of Decorative Crochet and Crochet Magic magazines! To me, they have far better patterns than the rest of the ones I see on the racks today.

One of these days *sigh* I'm going to get a scanner. I have many antique patterns that I'd love to put on the net. One of them is a wall hanging for a peacock in filet. I haven't found the thread I wan't to use for it yet--still looking for the perfect size 20 dark teal or peacock blue.

Have you tried Handy Hands to find the thread? (http://www.hhtatting.com/index.html) They primarily target tatters, but are a good place to look for thread for crochet.

PennyAnnie, that must have been a wonderful time to get together on Sundays and do handwork! Sounds like something we could do with our friends and family today!
