A coworker was telling me the Democrats will be kicking themselves for pushing for illegal immigrant amnesty once all these Catholics start voting for Republicans once they get amnesty. He said these Latinos are against abortion and homosexuals so they will overwhelmingly vote Republican.

Your coworker is basically right.

The thing is, the Democrats don't care so much about situating their positions on civil rights related issues in such a way that their own benefit is the primary concern and/or motive.

Whether you see that as political suicide or political integrity is your own prerogative.

Except, of course, for the fact that both the Catholic and Hispanic demographics tend to vote overwhelmingly for the Democrats.

You'd get the impression from the Bishops' Conference that most Catholics vote for the anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage candidates, but the official line and the reality are worlds apart.
