  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is staggering

And people think capitalism works? It just wastes the world's resources, pollutes the world so that people can buy the material goods that they have been convinced they need. All this in order to make more profit: madness.

This is the world (entire globe) economic status ... not just countries that have capitalism.

What good is money if they can't convince people they need it for something? Money itself is worthless but the power behind it and the wealth made licensing the right to print it is quite lucrative. Money is the concept of a wealth that does not actually exist.

Yes, but capitalism is the dominant system and exploits the world. To keep it afloat, goods need bought- hence more 'debt'.

This debt keeps people in jobs and generates profits. The system doesn't work and it is destroying the Earth.

In the UK, we have had the dryest winter on record. Yesterday was the warmest February day I have ever known. It was 20°C. That is a summer temperature in winter. 16 out of the last 17 years have been the hottest ever. Mostly due to CO2 emissions because of this need to manufacture pointless goods that we don't really need.

It doesn't look like anything will improve. Climate change will increase. Debt will rise. Poverty will rise and so will famine, disease, sea-levels, migration- as parts of the world become unliveable. I could go on, but I probably shouldn't.

well ... it's a way of conducting commerce ... when we and other countries went to fiat currency and off the gold standard ... then it became fairy dust.

Capitalism - an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.

"rather than by the state" - haven't really had true capitalism for a long long time.

There's no perfect system because mankind is corrupt.

The ethos still stands. We are still consuming just to make a profit. The masses toil and have no real benefit from it. Alienation is rife and people tend to think materialism will make them happy.

It's also lifted billions of people out of poverty, resulted in tremendous technological breakthroughs, given people a choice to live their lives in a way that they believe will maximize their personal utility, etc.

People rightly point out many of capitalism's faults. But name another economic system that has actually resulted in as much good in as many places in as short a time as capitalism has facilitated.

Also, not to be pedantic, but capitalism can take many forms. We should be precise about what we mean when we say "capitalism." Adam Smith's capitalism is not Gordon Gecko's capitalism, for instance. We should be careful not to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Yes, I agree ... nothing is perfect ... like you stated ... more have benefited from capitalism than from any other system ... by a long shot.

It's probably too late to throw the baby out with the bath water. A more apt metaphor would be that we are leaving the baby in the bath water unattended. Climate change is happening and it seems unlikely the three major pollutors (China, USA, and India) will change their ways. The Earth is being destroyed, all for the sake of profit and the science backs it up. Billions more will suffer because greed is more important than our children's futures. In the next few years water poverty will be increasing for millions.

We managed to live on this Earth without too much of an impact until 150 years ago when the industrial revolution really took hold.

We have the technology to make the change, greed prevents it.

The plume of soot from China settling over the Arctic and absorbing heat from the sun to melt ice would not be there if the nations using China for cheap labour moved elsewhere. But then the pollution would start somewhere else. Greed is the reason outside nations are there, but an unwillingness to follow pollution regulations is what forced them out of home in the first place. It is a vicious circle.

True this old earth with all of its sin is destined to wear out someday just like God said it would. And then there will be a new Earth with no more sin. Finish the good race examine ourselves and look forward to that.

This one is turning to rust and dust.
