Most of you call me a "liberal" (though I see myself more as a moderate). Lets see which apply:
If a conservative doesnt like guns, he doesn`t buy one. If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed. - I shoot guns and my dad worked for one of the major gun manufacturers for over 40 years. I don't think guns should be banned, but I do believe that ownership should be a privilege and not a right - there are scary people out there who should not own firearms. There should be consistent regulations nation-wide with mandatory waiting periods of at least 5-7 days. All IMO.
If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn`t eat meat. If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone. Not a vegetarian, and don't think the government should be telling me what I can and can't eat. However, I applaud public schools for making their lunches healthier - that's where a lot of my bad eating habits came from. I also agree with better labeling of nutritional information on what we eat. I'm really trying to watch my weight, and I want to know what I'm putting in my mouth so I can make an informed choice.
If a conservative sees a foreign threat, he thinks about how to defeat his enemy.
A liberal wonders how to surrender gracefully and still look good. I think we should defeat our enemy if it's a real threat. Anyone want to tell me were the WMDs were in Iraq and show me where there was an Al Quaeda threat in Iraq? I have friends and family who have served this country in the armed forces asking the same questions so I know I'm not being a liberal hippy on this. I wonder if we didn't go to Iraq and instead concentrated on Afghanistan that if we would have gotten Bin Laden - especially after the recent report in the news that in late 2001, we were pretty close to getting him.
If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life. If a liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect. Not a homosexual so not going there right now.
If a black man or Hispanic are conservative, they see themselves as independently successful. Their liberal counterparts see themselves as victims in need of government protection. Funny that the ones I find making racist comments, and who have issues with me adopting children who happen to be from Africa call themselves "conservatives." Rush Limbaugh said recently that adopting children from Africa is the "accessory du jour of the Hollywood left." What the???? So, these people who call themselves conservatives believe that Madonna and Angelina Jolie represent all of us adopting from Africa. How freaking absurd, and unintelligent. I can't even begin to talk about the above when this is going on - if Rush Limbaugh could have been the conservative who made the above statement, there is no way I could take that statement seriously or as fact, given what he says about adopting children from Africa. Even if he didn't, given the fact that all the negative comments I've received about what we are doing have only come from people who call themselves conservatives, I just can't take it seriously - last I checked, children from Africa are black too, and our society will see them as black. I'm not planning on raising them to believe they are victims, quite the contrary, but I would be doing my future kids a disservice to not be mindful of how society as a whole views them so I can help prepare them, and like I said - I can't deny where what negativity I'm getting is coming from.
If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation. A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him. My parents, and my husbands' parents, who all worked very, very hard their entire lives, are a heart attack away from being royally screwed and have little in the way of retirement (and in the case of my parents too old/disabled to go back to work). None of them have ever been extravagant in their spending. We have been financially supporting them, but not sure if we can keep that up at the rate we have been once the kids get here. They need insurance coverage that does not include a "donut hole." My mom is in the donut hole right now, and it's killing her and dad. I don't think it's too much to ask for, given they have worked and paid their taxes and social security all those years. I don't know that the Obama plan is the best plan, but something needs to change from the way insurance is handled now. IMO.
If a conservative doesnt like a talk show host, he switches channels. Liberals demand that those they dont like be shut down. I'm anti-censorship and better at switching channels than my husband. Funny the e-mails I get saying we should censor this or that for this reason or that reason come from acquaintances who call themselves "conservatives."
If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesnt go to church. A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced.
(Unless its a foreign religion, of course!). We should all be allowed to worship openly.
If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it. A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his. See above regarding my parents. Further there is my co-worker who is on as a temp, meaning she can't get insurance from our employer. She makes too much to qualify for government assistance, and she is currently sick and can't afford to go to the doctor. Not a lot of jobs open in my field right now. Sorry, but this just isn't right. Also, children have no control of their circumstances. Churches and charities can feed people and put a roof over their heads, and I believe in going there before going to the government for help. However, Churches and charities can't provide medical care to
all children whose parents can't afford it. I can't believe anyone would wish a child to go without health coverage lest we pay for it with our taxes. It's just unfathomable to me. I know we've talked about it again and again, and I know, appreciate and respect your arguments to the contrary. However, I feel convicted on this point. No one has shown me anything to change my mind.
If a conservative slips and falls in a store, he gets up, laughs and is embarrassed. If a liberal slips and falls, he grabs his neck, moans like he's in labor; then sues. ROFLOL!!! I've worked for lawyers for 18 years. The absolute worst clients we have ever had, the ones who think they have a multi-million dollar case when they don't have a case at all, are ones who claim to be conservatives and Christians. The absolute worst clients we ever had were pastors (no Lutheran pastors, thankfully). It's sad, but true, with just a few exceptions - only one or two come to mind. If there is a Bible verse or something about hoping you have a blessed day on the client's answering machine, we cringe, because those are the greediest, most horrible clients. My boss (a Christian) and I are always scratching our heads at this.
If a conservative reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh. A liberal will delete it because he's "offended". I don't like harassing my friends with forwards, so I delete just about everything.
These are my honest observations that I see in my life. I probably have more conservative friends than liberal friends - and I'm not describing all conservatives in general. The few that have come up in my life that contradict many of those statements above only call themselves conservatives, and I think I made that distinction. In my opinion, the definition of what makes a true conservative, a true moderate, a true liberal, and a true nutcase, has been skewed over the last 20 years. When I describe my observations, I say they call themselves "conservative" when in reality, some of them are probably just a nutcase.
Still, thinking of the true liberals (rather liberal in my opinion) that I know of, very few of the above apply still.
Great conversation piece, Stude!
