Thanks for listing those, Shane.
I can fill in the short reasons Jeff gave, but I didn't jot down everything.
1. God's not giving you more than you can handle.
Reason: That's not true. God
allows things [not necessarily "gives them"] that are more than we can handle so we lean on Him more...so we need to rely on His grace, His strength, His wisdom.
2. Everything happens for a reason.
Reason: Sometimes things happen that are senseless. Sometimes evil shreds things apart. That's why we have grace & the beauty of Jesus, who is victorious over that evil. Be careful when you say this phrase, because sometimes it's the LAST thing someone wants to hear. We need to learn the ministry of presence. When things go wrong, we need to learn to sit in someone's grief with them. Just to be present. To be a person of love next to them saying, "I'm here for you....I love you....we're in the trenches together".
3. Will all the visitor's please stand?
Reason: It's just awkward. Let relationships just happen.
4. I covet your prayers.
Reason: Why use the word, "covet"---a word that actually means a sin? Why not just use "need" or "would appreciate"..."could use"?
5. You must be blessed with the gift of singleness.
Reason: That person may not *want* to be single.
6. I need to love on some kids.
Reason: "I love kids" is fine. There's no need to say, "love ON"....that's kinda creepy.
7. I'll pray about it.
Reason: If it's true---no problem. If it's being used as a synonym for, "I don't know how to say 'no' to you....." then just say, "no". It's okay. We can't say "yes" to everything.
8. Jesus is my co-pilot.
Reason: That's bordering on heresy. Jesus is the pilot. Without a pilot we die.
9. God helps those who help themselves.
Reason: God gives grace to the humble, binds up the brokenhearted. He gives grace to those that have no ability to help themselves. That's exactly who He helps. To say "God helps those who help themselves" is actually putting a huge barrier between what God actually says is true and those that He says He helps...which are those that are willing to receive His help.
10. You just need to forgive yourself.
Reason: We aren't the highest authority---God is. What we need is to soak in that God has forgiven us. Rest in what He's done for us. We're a new creation in Him.
That's the gist of it
