  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

1Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. [1 Thes. 5:1-3]

"The Day of the Lord" speaks to the return of Christ, in this context. That said, when examining the phrase more broadly, there have been many days of the Lord throughout biblical history. I was responding to your specific inquiry regarding the thief in the night. The point being: Don't wait to repent and believe the good news. You don't know when Christ will return and your opportunities will expire. Of course, this same point could be made regarding death.

As TimRout said, “the day of the Lord” speaks to the return of Christ.

On that day the believers are called up to be with Christ and everyone left behind will be destroyed with all of this creation (2 Peter 3:10). This terrible event will take them by surprise – like a thief breaking into their house. Many in false gospels will think they are saved (Matt15:8, 1 Thess 5:3, Phil 3:18,2 Tim 4:3) but really are not so they are not watching for Christ’s return. They are saying peace & safety…For them the Lords return will take them by surprise like a thief in the night and they will die along with all the unsaved of the world (Matt 24:37-39, Luke 17:28-32) who will also be taken by surprise. But, for those God has saved they are watching so will not be surprised when Christ returns (1 Thess 4). Christ also describes this in Matt 24:43.

We watch and are saved through prayful study of God’s Word (Ro 10:17, I Peter1:23). It is the light by which we should be walking
