There's this one line in mass I've been wondering about...

You know how right before we receive communion, the congregation says "Lord I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed".. What does that mean exactly? It's almost as if it implies we should be hearing a response from God at that moment...

It's a reference to the centurion's words about not being worthy for Christ to enter his home, but that Christ could heal his child with a mere word.
Hmm, ok that makes sense then, thanks.

I have a friend who had that exact question a little while ago. Others have answered. But I want to add that I find it an amazing place in the mass where we have an act of faith. "Only say the word" Like in Scripture the centurion did not need to see. A great lesson of faith so very necessary at the Eucharist.

Biblically, its a reference to the Roman soldier who said he was not worthy to have Jesus come into his house, but if Jesus only said the word, his servant would be healed.

Generally, as far as you and I go, it pretty much means what it says: We are NOT worthy to have the God of the Universe come to us under the appearance of bread, but we pray that he will heal us none the less.

I always thought that it was a prayer that is not only a reference to the Roman soldier but is a prayer to be forgiven of any venial sins we have on our conscience.

Me too. Or unconfessed remembered venial sins for that matter.

Actually, the Penetential Rite at the beginning of Mass is the prayer for venial sins:

I confess to almighty God,
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned through my own fault,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done,
and in what I have failed to do;
and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin,
all the angels and saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord, our God.

I like this line too. We do not use it in the Eastern Rite, but I say it before receiving to myself. It is simply a profession of FAITH.

If one is on fire for God and is sincere about those words, then you are forgiven and worthy of God's forgiveness and to receive Him.

And yes, I get an answer immediately in my heart and love I feel from Him when I do receive Him.
