Pope Leo is an American from Chicago. That is unexpected.

Though he spent much of his life in the Global South, and is thought to be more conservative than Francis.

Very true.

I didn’t expect that at all! Wow!

Interesting that it was so fast...and also interesting that it sounds like "He is going to build on francis' legacy" kinda talk....
Not to mention, he’s also relatively young. Pope Francis was 76 when he was elected. I thought it would be someone older. I dunno.

Pope Leo XIV (formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost) is an American-born Catholic prelate who was elected Pope on May 8, 2025, taking the name Leo XIV. He is the first pontiff from the United States and the first from North America in the history of the Catholic Church.

Pope Leo XIV is generally regarded as a centrist within the Catholic Church, blending progressive social outreach with doctrinal conservatism, according to College of Cardinals Report.

Pope Leo XIV has consistently emphasized inclusivity and compassion toward marginalized groups, including the poor and migrants. He is also a strong advocate for synodality, promoting a more inclusive and participatory Church structure.

While progressive in social matters, Pope Leo XIV maintains traditional stances on key doctrinal issues. He opposes the ordination of women as deacons, expressing concerns that such changes might not address underlying challenges within the Church.

To be fair, my opinion is based on only one sentence.

Do you have more information on "what kinda pope" he could be?

The new pope is expected to be a centrist. Francis had a reputation for being somewhat liberal before becoming pope.

I had ChatGPT make a detailed report on how Cardinal Prevost would handle various social issues, and what nuances he would bring to the papacy:

As a Protestant, I don't think taking the name Leo is so auspicious. Protestants haven't had particularly good relationships in general with popes named Leo, whereas Francis of Asisi is a beloved figure among quite a few Protestants.

This is what I was hoping for, honestly. While gender-related issues are important to me, I think that much more important (and much clearer in Scripture!) is how we as Christians treat the poor, migrants, and other people in severe need. I look forward to the new Pope's leadership on this.
