• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Greetings,

Here's a basic theological question (though it is tide to what I struggle with now)-- Can a true believer trade away his salvation?

I mean think about, with Esau and Jacob, Esau traded away his birthright for a bowl stew.

Can this be applied to salvation? Or is there any example (or support) in the Bible were someone traded in their savlation for something else?

There's a difference between a birthright and one's whole salvation. I don't think people purposefully trade in their salvation, but in a sense this can happen. Remember when Jesus said "What profit is it if a man gain the entire universe but lose his own soul?" I guess that's pretty similar to 'trading it in'.

The answer is no, it is no because salvation is not dependent on man's will, salvation is dependent on the power of God. Jesus said:

"You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit--fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name." (John 15:16)

Jesus chooses us, we in turn submit to Him, our salvation is not dependent on our efforts, will or performance. God saves us because of His Son and the atonement He provided when He chose to die for our sins, He chose us out of the world by His will and we submit to His will.

The answer is no. The birthright thing refers to how people in this world trade in eternal life because of their sins in this life. In the context of eternity, this life is as insignificant as a bowl of stew, so it would be silly to live in debauchery and trade in something so great for a cheap thrill.
Your salvation is also not a right. It is a gift. God is not an "indian giver" if you will pardon the colloquialism. He is not going to give you a gift and then take it away because your mind is failing you.
