A few years ago I wrote a fantasy novel I thought was very good. I passed it around to numerous beta readers, and with one notable exception the feedback was extremely enthusiastic. I queried it to an agent, and she wrote back and asked to see two excerpts. I sent them, and waited. She responded that she was looking for a more strongly written story. I was devastated! I doubted myself, my writing ability, my call from God (to write), etc. etc. It was a difficult experience.
Now that time has passed I realize that that agent did me a huge favor. My characters and plot were strong, but my writing really was weak! I have since improved a massive amount, and I am in the process of querying again. What I would like to know is, has anyone else had a similar experience? Did you once think your writing was great, and have to find out the hard way that you needed improvement? If so, where in the process are you today? Do you look back, as I do, on what at one time seemed a calamity but in retrospect looks like a truly wonderful blessing?
