  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I used to debate a lot in a political forum. One time I got into a heated argument with somebody about abortion, and there was something he said that just made me so mad.

His argument was this: abortion has been shown to reduce crime. If you look at the time period when abortions occur and look 20 years into the future, you'll see that there is less crime than previously. This is because a lot of the would be criminals were aborted.

Now let me remind, these guys are die hard liberals. They pretty much followed everything that Michael Moore and Ted Kennedy said.

So let's take a look at their logic:

The death penalty is wrong. It is wrong to execute people even if they have commited terrible crimes. That's not right. We shouldn't kill those on death row because we might kill an innocent man.

Abortion is right. It is right to kill somebody who has a potential to be a criminal since they are born in a poor family or don't have a father figure. We should kill those in the womb because we might kill a criminal.

I'm sorry, but this just made me so *%!& mad.

No, that's not the worst ever. Worst ever, which I saw on Kuro5hin once, was "people used to do herbal abortions all the time, it's obviously moral".

(I'm not really debating, so much as flatly contradicting. Yeah, that's the ticket!)

Well if it's herbal- it must be natural...

Yeah, and following that logic we might kill the person to find the cure for AIDS, or cancer.

:amen:

I was thinking the same thing. We could be killing off the next Mozart or saint or discoverer of a cure for cancer, etc. No matter what, killing a baby is utterly sick!

I agree with this one.

Ah yes, the old God-forbid-that-someone-should-grow-up-in-a-single-parent-home-because-then-they-might-develop-neuroses-so-let's-just-kill-them-in-the-womb-instead argument. First of all, it deprives someone of even the chance at life, as if they have no hope. (What would Frederick Douglass say?) Secondly, it denigrates and makes false claims about those who did come from single parent homes and who established themselves as valuable members of the community.

Whoa, dude, you're a K5er? There used to be a man there with the username "Recreational Abortion". Yeah, if you ever want to see sloppy atheistic argumentation by stereotypical g**ks, that's definitely the place to go.

I know how frustrating it can be to argue with people about abortion. Normally I can make a good case, but there are a few whom words cant change.

I was wearing a prolife shirt to school and a girl told me she was prochoice (without any "hi". I knew this was going to be a tough one ;) ) Anyway, she eventually said, "Yea, I believe its actually alive and everything, but I dont care if I kill it; im not having a baby before Im married."
Arg, I can argue with people who have some sort of respect for life but have convinced themselves that life doesnt start at conception. But this is totally different, and I think there are those influential in the movement that hold Jenn's opinion, that they dont care whether they kill or not.
