Welcome to the Writer's Dojo! Here you can learn the art of writing and sharpen you skills to a professional level.

Why is this called the dojo? Well, have you ever studied martial arts? Writing is similar to martial arts. It has forms, it has technique, it can be practiced. You've gotta study to do well in A tournament. We may have talent, but we always have room to improve. This can be done under the instruction of a sensei.

Hence, the dojo.

I will make one thing clear: I am NOT, in any way, claiming to be the best; though, I am not the worst either. In fact, no one is.

I've built this place so we all can learn new ways of writing and to sharpen our skills. So let's get into our gi's, hop happily onto the mat, and...well...teach or learn!

all right, as I am reading Dwight Swain's Techniques of the Selling Writer, and I consider it to be the best, most benefit-packed thing ever written on the subject of writing, I intend to perfect my use of this form.

Since I like to RP with good writers, and I seem to spend most of gametime with you, Light, I'm going to share what I'm learning with you. Once you see how it works, you should be able to practice it reasonably well with me.

Be aware, I am not a black belt here. I would personally class myself as a greenie, like I am in karate. So although I am confident in my grasp of the form, don't expect master-level whoopalah out of me. I'm still in training too, you know.

Now, I’ll begin. I’m using a lot of Swain’s language here.

Fiction is comprised of units. Take Lego houses as an analogy. Blocks interlocked in rows and layers make up walls. Interlocked walls make a house.

You can build stories in much the same way as you would a Lego house. Unit by unit, wall by wall. It’s that easy. In theory anyway. I’m finding it harder to do than I thought.

Since I’m staying in the context of RPing, I’ll omit the impertinent stuff and say you basically need to know two things.

1) How to write in motivation-reaction units
2) How to think in terms of scene and sequel
