Hello everyone, I am an atheist who has a passion for religions, and if there is a religion that has any chance of being true, in my opinion, is Christianity, due to all the historical evidences of the death of Jesus or things like the shroud of Turin. I have watched and read some books about the historicity of Jesus and so on, so if a few years ago I would have been 95% atheist, nowadays I am 70%. I give Christianity much more points but I still have more reasons to not believe in God.

Anyways to get to the topic, in my native language there is a specific branch of speaking that is dedicated to insult the divinities, it's called a bestemmia. Nothing like it exists in English. It is something like f*** God or you describe a divinity with filthy attributes, often you link the divinity to an animal or something like that.

31 Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

When I was younger, I remember that I read Matthew 12:31 in which it is said that blasphemy against the holy spirit is the only sin that will never be forgiven. And, stupid and arrogant as I was, I willingly insulted the holy spirit a few times that day. Specifically the holy spirit. Now I don't remember the exact words I pronounced anymore, but it was something like I described above, so I either said f*** the holy spirit or I described the holy spirit as a filthy animal or something.

Today I'd never do that. Was that day the day that I have forever condemned myself to hell? Is there any point in me reading all these books and thinking about God all this time if my fate is already signed?

I have already searched this topic around, and pretty much everyone says that it's not a problem and that you can be forgiven. They say that you have to read it into its context, and so only who sees a miracle done by the holy spirit and calls it an act of the devil has actually committed the unpardonable sin.

To be honest though, these explanations that all the gurus give online, seem to me nothing more than some cheap wishful thinking made to make us blasphemers feel better about ourselves.

What is your true, honest, brutal opinion about it? Please answer without trying to make me feel better about myself. Matthew 12:31 seems pretty clear to me, and if it is I hope there is no God otherwise I will be tormented in hell forever, as if this life wasn't already enough.

Thank you for your opinions, please be brutally honest.

My dad’s first language was French Canadian (heavy on the slang) and their form of swearing was to insult all the aspects of the catholic church. I don’t recall him ever taking a situation that was clearly a miracle and giving the credit to satan for performing it. But then, I never experienced him ever experiencing a miracle either. His peculiar form of swearing didn’t constitute a substitute to that fact imo.

So you too think that Jesus was talking solely about people who attribute a miracle to satan and not to people who insult the holy spirit?

Yup. Let’s say some healing is performed and you acclaim that voodoo achieved it. But the bible says all good things comes from the Father of Lights but you have just given glory to the Father of Darkness who cannot achieve anything but death. I think that is what is being referred to. It’s a blindness that cannot be removed it seems.

1.True brutal honest truth is that name calling Holy spirit is not unforgivable sin nor is it any more or less in weight of punishment than lying , murdering or stealing is if you commit one sin you are guilty of all it's in human nature to give things "levels" of punishment like you would not be mad if a 2 year kid was playing with bottle of milk and throw it at you and laugh but it would be serious offence to throw broken bottle of glass at president of USA .

With God it's not like that you are either sinless or sinner.
James 2:10

2.Then what is the unforgivable sin against Holy Spirit?
It's not accepting salvation when it's offered to you by Holy Spirit. Jesus paid price for all sin on cross but he can't force you to be saved because you have free will.
So God sends preachers who preach word of God and give to somebody the gospel. If the person hears the gospel , understands it and reject it then he is commiting sin against Holy Spirit if he doesn't repent and believe ( repentance is changing mind from whatever you believed to " I'm sinner in need of saviour and realising that Jesus is the saviour and wanting to be saved " - it's not stopping doing certain sins .

3.That's why these religious Jewish leaders of the time Jesus came to them proclaim the gospel commited the sin because :
a) They knew who Jesus was but didn't want him to rule over them in his way
b) They were not surprised and understood well , it's not like Jesus appeared suddenly and was like HERE I AM and they were like who are you ? They had hundreds of prophesy written by multiple people along ages and even they had exactly the date Jesus rode on a donkey and was proclaimed messiah literally if they had calendar they could cross out X each day untill Jesus did it so they had no excuse , so they willfully rejected him and commited the sin , hope it explains alot.

4. Also salvation is free gift read 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 , Romans 3:23, Ephesians 2:8-9 , Ephesians 1:13-14, Romans 11:6 .

In the age of judgement to come people won't burn in lake of fire because they murdered somebody because it was paid on cross for that , they will equally be punished for rejecting salvation so they all will be guilty of Blaspheming Holy Spirit.

It's clear that Christ died for ungodly not for people who are saved , he died for all alredy . Romans 5:6

Today I'd never do that
"The Father does not desire than any should perish." Jesus went to a lot of pain and effort to save us, and does not want any of it wasted.

Note that the religious leaders in Mt 12 did not call HS names. They attributed to satan His beautiful work of freeing someone. And Jesus doesn't accuse them of the unforgivable sin, He merely warns of its existence. Jesus is saying here that it is not about the words coming out of the mouth, it is the motivations of the heart.

Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of hearts. And then each one's praise will come from God. -1Cor 4

Jesus wants you back. He is the Good Shepherd seeking the lost sheep, and the father of the prodigal son who waits longingly and sees the son returning even a long way off (Luke 15).

Heb 11.6 tells us that God wants us to believe He is able to save and is willing to save.

Do not delay. Exercise faith in the Lord's goodness right now and begin to return to Him. He says He will turn away none who come to Him (Jn 6.37). "He who is forgiven much, loves much".

Thank you for this answer. But these are the words of James, a mere human, couldn't he be wrong about it?

Isn't that a stretch for the verb "to blaspheme"? From what I am reading, Jesus should have said that the unpardonable sin is disbelief rather than blasphemy, because all the explanations I have read online are not, in fact, blasphemy.
It seems to me that Jesus is indeed speaking about "name calling" or "insulting", because he specifies that he who blasphemes against Jesus can be forgiven, but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit cannot be forgiven. If it were merely a matter of believing, how could there be this distinction? Not believing in Jesus would equally result in being damned, so it doesn't make sense, does it?

That said, I am still committing the unforgivable sin, even if you are right, because I am reading the gospels, I think I understand them yet I don't believe yet. Didn't Thomas need to touch the wounds of Jesus, a person who he had known in real life, in order to believe? Why should someone be damned for not believing, when he has had way less evidence than those privileged ones who could witness Jesus divinity with their own eyes?

Anyways thank you sincerely for the time you've spent for me.

You are absolutely right in pointing out that those people who Jesus is addressing, did nothing like what I did, but I don't know, it still doesn't add up to me.

Thank you for your time.

I have looked at what word is used in the original text, and it seems to be this one:βλασφημια

which, unfortunately for me, means exactly what I have done and has nothing to do with disbelieving. I guess I will only find out when I die...

Turn to the LORD.

You need to read this:Unforgivable? The unpardonable sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Bible help and hope

Impossible to be Saved?
“When forgiveness is impossible, cling to Jesus, and ‘impossible’ becomes a word that loses all meaning.

It is utterly impossible for any camel to pass through the eye of a needle, and yet Jesus said that even that impossibility would be easier than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. Let’s not water down what Jesus was saying. A camel was the largest creature commonly found in the nation and the eye of a needle was the tiniest easily describable opening. It’s not just hard; it’s impossible. The disciples understood. They were flabbergasted. ‘Who then can be saved?’ they asked in astonishment. If ever you are tempted to think it is impossible for God to forgive your hideous sins, then burn Jesus’ reply into your brain, ‘With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God’ (Mark 10:27).

Let’s clarify the matter by revisiting this incident. Jesus stated that it is impossible for some people to be saved. Then – apparently only because the disciples queried him – in the next breath he said that with God nothing is impossible. From this we see that no matter how impossible it might be for a Holy Spirit blasphemer to be saved, it suddenly becomes possible when the God of the impossible becomes involved.

The issue then becomes: will such a person change his or her attitude and seek God for this miracle or will the person continue to spurn his or her only hope of salvation? We already know where God stands – he wants no one to perish. The ball is back in the blasphemer’s court.”
