“Your testimonies are wonderful;
Therefore my soul observes them.
The unfolding of Your words gives light;
It gives understanding to the simple.
I opened my mouth wide and panted,
For I longed for Your commandments.” (Psalm 119:129-131 NASB1995)

From as young as I can remember, and I can remember back to when I was only two years old, I have been taught the Scriptures. My family attended gatherings of the church at least three times a week, where we were taught the Holy Scriptures in quite depth. I can recall that we also had a Child Evangelism Fellowship Bible club which met in our home, at one time. And as I grew a little older we had a Christian version of Girl Scouts I attended, and then there was youth group, where we also studied the Scriptures.

I also was involved in Bible quizzing, where we had to memorize many Scriptures, and then, as a teenager, I began teaching the Scriptures to children, and I taught Child Evangelism Backyard Bible clubs two summers in a row. And I was very active in Youth For Christ when I was in Junior High and Senior High School, where we were also taught the Scriptures. I also attended the yearly Bible Missionary Conference with my parents and siblings, and children’s/youth summer (Bible) camp at Beulah Beach Camp.

The Bible translation I was taught from was the King James Bible translation, which was written in 17th century British English, which is not the English that I speak (I live in the USA). I speak 20th century American English. I also had a fairly severe reading comprehension disability, to the point to where I began college, at age 18, reading on a 4th grade level, 9 years lower than my grade level. So the King James Bible was very difficult reading for me. Then, in the early 70’s my pastor suggested the New American Standard Bible translation, and all of a sudden the Scriptures became alive to me.

Now I could understand the Scriptures in a way in which I had never understood them before. And this fits here with “The unfolding of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” For I was “the simple,” the unpretentious, the trusting, the believing, the plain. I believed God and his word. I hungered after the Word of God. And the Word of God was now being clarified and explained and disclosed to me in a way I never understood it before. And I could hear God’s voice speaking to me in a way I never experienced before. And I felt God’s presence like never before.

And God called me to be a teacher of the Scriptures, first to children, then mostly to women in Sunday School classes or in women’s Bible studies. And then he called me to write down what he teaches me each day from my times with him in his Word and to post these daily times I have with the Lord on the internet. And the Scriptures are still my delight. They are wonderful! I still long for the commandments of my Lord. They still give light to my heart and mind, and the Lord gives me understanding so that I can obey him. And I love to obey my Lord, to walk in his ways, and to follow in his truth.

[Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 10:27-30; Acts 26:18; Romans 2:5-10; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; 1 Corinthians 10:1-22; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-6; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 12:1-2; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 1:1-10; 1 John 2:3-6; 1 John 3:4-10]

My Sheep

My sheep hear me. They know me.
They listen to my voice and obey.
I call them and lead them.
They know my voice, so they follow me.
They will never follow strangers.
They will run away from them.
The voice of a stranger they know not;
They do not follow him.

So, I tell you the truth that
I am the gate, so you enter in.
Whoever does enter
Will find forgiveness and will be saved.
Nonetheless whoever enters
Not by the gate; other way,
He is the thief and a robber.
Listen not, the sheep to him.

Oh, I am the Good Shepherd,
Who laid his own life down for the sheep.
I know them. They know me.
They will live with me eternally.
The thief only comes to steal and
Kill and to destroy the church.
I have come to give you life that
You may have it to the full…

They know my voice, so they follow me.

Most of what I learned I had to learn on my own. I did not have very good teachers. Despite my poor teachers, I had the desire to read the Bible for myself.
I learned a lot of people won't read the Bible b/c they think it's too complicated or b/c they don't like what it says.
One of the things I learned is "it says what it says". It's written so the simple can understand. It is not written to mislead or decieve.
