  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

We all know what that is. I've been guilty of that while visiting other countries and I regret it. Ok, so for a little history. To Great Britain, while you all were in power for several centuries, was there ever such thing as an "ugly Englishman"? How about the French and Spaniards? When your respective nations were the major players on the world stage, how did other nations feel about you? Is there anything from the literature of that period to give you an idea of how your countrymen were perceived around the globe? For some reason, my trick knee is telling me that in history, this isn't the first time that a nation and her citizens had been criticized (and in many cases, rightly so) when her country was a world power. I'm not suggesting that Americans are beyond reproach, only that to a certain extent, when you're on top of the heap, everybody throws rocks at you. I just doubt that this is the first time in history it's happened. In fact, when we weren't a world power, we probably took part in some rock throwing of our own.

I know that in Algeria, there is the "ugly American", the "ugly Frenchman" (especially this one), the "ugly Italian", "ugly Englishman" etc. Algeria had many colonists from France, Malta, Spain, Sicily etc and many people, especially old people are still bitter because they grew up at the foot of the hills where the French people lived or lived on farms owned by Europeans and such. Most colonial nations had the native population hate them. Indonesia comes to mind with the Dutch and Syria with France.
