That we even use the word "busing" to describe what was in fact court-ordered school desegregation, and that Americans of all stripes believe that the brief period in which we actually tried to desegregate our schools was a failure, speaks to one of the most successful propaganda campaigns of the last half century.

I remember riding the bus into downtown Tampa as a kid... I don't care if it worked, it was no fun at all. My parents pulled me out of school and sent me to a private school soon after that. I just couldn't handle the bus ride that was almost an hour long to go to a school that looked more like a prison.
We have to find better ways to help black kids that taking suburban kids and turning them into guinea pigs.
Busing was a failure on many levels.
To isolate the impact of court-ordered school integration in the 1960s, '70s, and '80s, Johnson used two strategies. First, he compared students in the same school district right before and after court-ordered integration was put in place. Second, he compared pairs of siblings, when one went to integrated schools but the other didn't.
His conclusions were similar: integration helped black students academically and into adulthood.
The effects were quite large: going to integrated schools for an additional five years caused high school graduation rates to jump by nearly 15 percentage points and reduced the likelihood of living in poverty by 11 percentage points.
In a follow-up analysis, Johnson found that these benefits extended to the next generation. The children of those who attended integrated schools had higher test scores and were more likely to attend college, too.
Johnson’s work is consistent with other research. Another national paper found that school desegregation efforts in the '70s reduced the dropout rate among black students, though the effect was smaller than Johnson’s estimate. A study focusing on Louisiana between 1965 and 1970 found that integration dramatically boosted black students’ chances of graduating high school.

If there were all-black schools with all-black teachers there wouldn't be any racism. That alone would solve a major problem facing black kids. Why force racism on them by forcing them to attend white schools? You could also have a curriculum more appealing to black kids, and reflective of black history as well.

As I see it, forced integration (because that's what it was, in part) ... was an attempt to live up to the ideals and principles upon which this nation was founded ...
We regularly violate that principle when it comes to our children.One of which was freedom of association.
