The Truth About Busing: It Worked

Countdown for not reading the article and using arguments couched in colorblind racism to argue that desegregation is bad, but using phrases like "school choice" or statements akin to "states' rights."

Why bring up ancient history. Let's address today's problems with black education.

It is said that racism is a problem in the educational system. If there were all-black schools with all-black teachers there wouldn't be any racism. That alone would solve a major problem facing black kids. Why force racism on them by forcing them to attend white schools? You could also have a curriculum more appealing to black kids, and reflective of black history as well. It seems to me that integration at the high school level has caused more problems than it has solved.

The way I see it is that the failure of black education is simply the inability, or unwillingness, of the student to learn what the teacher is trying to teach him or her. If it is made to be more complicated than that then the answers must be found outside of the educational system.

I remember riding the bus into downtown Tampa as a kid... I don't care if it worked, it was no fun at all. My parents pulled me out of school and sent me to a private school soon after that. I just couldn't handle the bus ride that was almost an hour long to go to a school that looked more like a prison.

We have to find better ways to help black kids than taking suburban kids and turning them into guinea pigs.

Busing was a failure on many levels.

It is a real problem that property taxes pay for schools, but busing was the wrong response because it effectively punished children for no fault of their own.

I don’t have personal experience with busing. However, the Catholic high school I attended was not diverse. I would estimate that 95% of the population was Caucasian. With 5% comprised of Hispanic and Asian students. There were 4 African-American girls including myself. We all got along well.

My daughter had similar experiences and I think its made her more well-rounded. I believe exposure is important. But I’m uncomfortable with placing children in situations where they’d incur ridicule or harm. And that includes private and boarding schools too.

The parent isn’t walking that out. They aren’t dealing with the ridicule and insults. I don’t know what I would have done. I’m glad I don’t have to make that choice. It isn’t easy.

Did busing for school desegregation succeed? Here's what research says.

Because they will eventually graduate into a world which requires interaction with those of other races.

Shouldn't they be prepared for that eventuality ?

They could have a course on that.

They could have a course on that.
A course on the multiple variations of response they will receive as they process into a multi-cultural society ???

As I see it, forced integration (because that's what it was, in part) ... was an attempt to live up to the ideals and principles upon which this nation was founded ...

One of which was freedom of association.
We regularly violate that principle when it comes to our children.

We don't practice freedom of association when it comes to our kids.

Forcing them to go to school in the first place is a violation of that freedom for them ...

I was unaware that we had “black education”.
I thought we had “education”; why the color-qualifier?
