  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If you had a day totally to yourself - no obligations whatsoever - what would you do and why?

Just myself? I would probably start writing on something-either a humor column or some short fiction. I used to do that quite a lot before the real world came and gave me a job. :p

I'd also probably head out for a walk in the country, since country is about all there is around here.

what's your favorite place to go to in NY & why?

Well, I've never been to New York City, although I'd like to. Of the places I have been, I'd probably have to say Chautauqua Institution. It bids itself one of those "centers for the arts and religion," situated on a nice lake. I went there often in high school to participate in the All-County Band. It has a cozy little bookstore, too!

Or not... :sigh:

Be careful what you wish for. :D

You mention the red panda in your profile and started a thread on your avatar too. How'd you happen onto the red panda, what attracted you to it, and have you seen one in person (i.e., at a zoo, not in the wild)?

What are your favorite reading materials?

Books are my favorite. If I'm looking for a quick, fun read, I'll look into reference or answer books (fun ones like Uncle John's Bathroom Reader or Imponderables) or books/columns from Dave Barry. Otherwise, I like just about any type of fiction.

I happened upon the red panda while searching one night for giant pandas. When I saw a photo, I thought they looked really cool. "But why haven't I heard of them before?" I thought. Since then, I guess I've been an advocate for the critters. :D

And as a matter of fact, I have seen a red panda in real life. The Buffalo Zoo has one, and we spent a decent amount of time staring at each other.

Do you prefer paperback books or hardback books and why?

I prefer paperbacks because they're cheaper and easier to carry around. However, I tend to be careful with them, as I hate to damage books. I couldn't even bear to write in my college textbooks often, and if I had to, I used pencil! When I see someone folding the cover of a book back, part of me dies inside. I love my books.

Alrighty, Trip. Your wish is my command.

If you could be any kind of tree, what would you be? And why?

What's the most emotionally challenging situation you ever faced? How do you feel about it today?

LOL. You don't have to answer the second one, Trip. I was just imitating how Barbara Wawa likes to try to make people cry... :D

Ooooh...I have a good one...

What's the toughest thing you've ever had to do in your life to date?

The toughest thing I've had to do so far is break up with the girlfriend I had through college. It was a long relationship (since 7th grade), but it didn't really develop much emotionally or spiritually. She didn't seem to agree, though, and really seemed to be in love with me when I finally called it off.

She's doing well now. Her wedding is in about two months. She's marrying another guy named Tim, ironically.

Oh boy; one of the mega lists...

What has God been teaching you lately?
Over the past year I believe God has been guiding me closer to learning how to sustain myself as a single, solitary person. I have been attaining much clearer ways of thinking about my situation and have been depressed about it much less.

What are three of your strengths?
1) I'm book smart; able to retain a variety of knowledge that has even surprised myself sometimes.
2) I can write reasonably well--especially in the areas of journalism and humor (at least I hope I write well in those areas).
3) I try to listen before I respond.

3 of your weaknesses?
1) I don't consider myself a social butterfly. It can be difficult for me to strike up conversations with people I don't know well. My mind freezes.
2) Sometimes I feel I defeat myself before I try. I can't imagine something happening or going well sometimes, so I let the moment pass.
3) Sometimes I don't trust God's will for my life.

What advice would you give a single person wanting to be married?
I would tell him or her to find someone that has been married happily and ask them because I don't have a clue how to do it.:D

What advice would you give a sick person wanting to be well?
Stay in bed and drink plenty of fluids, of course.

What advice would you give to a dying person who wants to live?
Seek medical attention immediately. But if that's out of the question, then I'd tell them that death will not be bad at all if they've accepted Jesus as their savior. While there may be some loses in life, death is still an overpowering gain.

What advice would you give a married person who wants to be single?

I'd simply ask why.

What advice would you give to someone with a broken heart?
Time and God's love will close that wound; they are the only things that can.

What advice would you give to someone who is lonely?

This is one of the things I tend to struggle with, so I'm not really sure.

What advice would you give to someone who was unsure of their calling?
I don't think one's "calling" is necessarily something that is known immediately. God sometimes likes to prepare us before we know. Time and devotion must be continued, regardless.

Do you like giving advice?
If I'm confident that it is good advice, yes.

Do you like receiving advice?
If it is from a friend or family member and meant to build me up, I consider it a token of love.

What is the worst piece of advice someone gave you?
I had a bad day in high school once and my dad said, "Enjoy this; this is the best part of your life!"
"If this is as good as it gets, just shoot me now!" I retorted. :D

What about the best?
The best has probably been the simplest: Patience is a virtue.
