In the Bible the stars, moon and sun represent the three laws of govenment in this world. The stars represent our earlier guides and Prophets. They were small sparklings and twinkling of light giving mankind knowledge and understanding of himself.

The Moon is a greater light. It represents the law of justice brought to us by Moses. "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" is an advance on the simple survival of the fittest govenment that was prevelent before it.

But then with Jesus Christ as the Sun arrived. The Sun in the Bible represents Jesus's new covenant which is the law of justice but with "compassion and mercy" added to it.

Consider what the Old Testament Priests found to be the most common offence that Jesus did. He healed on the sabbath day. Therefore He brought compassion and mercy to the law of justice.

interesting... care to go deeper?

how did you come to this belief?

My grandfather made me aware of this. I have been researching it ever since and continue to find more and more that this analogy is built into the Bible. Here is a little more showing this amazing correspondence that seems to have been purposly written into our glorious Holy Bible. I really appreciate finding someone else to whom this is of interest.

The Sun, the Moon and the Stars.
The heavenly bodies which can be seen in the sky bring us light. The stars bring just a glimmer and a twinkle, the moon reflects a dull pale light and the Sun illuminates the world into full daylight. In the Bible the Sun, Moon and the Stars are used allegorically to represent the three rules of governance in this world.

"Thus saith the Lord, which giveth the Sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night,..." Jer.31;36

Just as the heavenly bodies each shine differing degrees of light unto us, so to do the three laws and ordinances give us different degrees of understanding.

1. The Stars represent the words of the Prophets which brought the Tribes of Israel advice and understanding.

2. The Moon represents the written Law which Moses taught to the Tribes of Israel to prepare them to enter into the Old Testament Covenant. It called for the enforcement of "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth." Ex.21;24

3. The Sun represents the New Christian Covenant that teaches us to add "compassion and Mercy" to the Law of Justice. This was demonstrated to us when Jesus continued to heal on the Sabbath regardless of the Pharasses negetive reaction. Mt.12;10 Mk.3;2 Lk.6;7 Jn.7;23

The Sun, the Moon and the Stars were all created on the 4th day of Genesis creation. Gen.1;16 But each of them shines a different type of light and represents a different law. They each have their own type of people to whom they appeal. They each have their own flocks to guide. This is what 1 Cor.15;41 means when it says;

"There is one glory of the Sun, and another glory of the Moon, and another glory of the Stars."

"The Sun to rule by day; Moon and Stars to rule by night. Ps.136;8,9

So this explains why in Genesis it ends each day's creation with the awkward phrase "and the evening and the morning were the ...day."

Under the Old Testament Law the night(moon) came before the daytime(sun). They therfore arranged their Old Testament calendar to follow the moon. But under the New Testament's Christian Covenant the Calendar was re-set to follow the Sun.

This was because darkness comes before light just as ignorance comes before understanding. So too for humanity it was nescessary for Mankind who were following Adam and Eve to at first be wrong before they were corrected by the Law. Then after humanity lived for a time under the Law of Justice they were at last ready to understand Jesus who taught them to add "compassion and mercy" to the Law of Justice. This, in my humble opinion is the meaning philosophically of what the Bible has been trying to teach us.
Any and all opinions on this subject would be appreciated. Thanks

"For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light;" Pr.6;23

Hi Dana,
Very interesting. Honestly I don't see the connection between the "moon" and "stars" and the various ordinances you mention. Have you found any more texts that more explicitly connect them? Seems rather arbitrary to me. But I haven't looked into it at all. Thanks for sharing!

well lets see what God says about these things in scripture.

I like to fulow the first mention rule and find where it is first mentioned in the bible and incorperate that into the foundation.

the first mention of the sun is day 4 of creation and day 5 is the first sunrise.

it is obvious that these first preceeding days are not governed by the sun and moon. they didnt exist yet. so untill day 4 we go by what God called day.

Remembering that God speaks from eternity, and in eternal terms.
God speaks from His heart and everything that is in Him is light, therefore His words are pure and light.

check out this perspective on creation... an insight into the heart of God at creation.
Pro 8:22 The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
Pro 8:23 I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.
Pro 8:24 When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.
Pro 8:25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:
Pro 8:26 While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
Pro 8:27 When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
Pro 8:28 When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
Pro 8:29 When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
Pro 8:30 Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
Pro 8:31 Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.
Pro 8:32 Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.

When God spoke God gave us His definition of Day.

the light that God made is day. remember Jesusu warning? take heed that the light in you is not darkness. lets go there briefly and get new testement...

Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Joh 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.
Joh 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Joh 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
Joh 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
Joh 1:6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
Joh 1:7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
Joh 1:8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
Joh 1:9That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

see that last verse?... the true light is the day that God named... not anothers definition .anything outside the light that God named, was darkness, and since this darkness was both literal and symbolic, He called darkness night and made a moon to govern the night before the sun was made to rule over it.

Notice God didnt say too much about that darkness, yet when He saw the light He saw it was Good. that is why He called it Day. God doesnt speak evil. He talks about His Son alot!

While He was in the world He was the loght of the world, and that light is now in us who believe! This is the light that God comanded to shine out of darknesss! the righteousness of God seperate from teh law!

WHAT A GOD

to reveal in this last time in His Son.

i have often thought about starting up a debate in the debates section pondering the righteousness of God as opposed to the law of God. but never could come up with a simple platform inwitch to present it.

and lets look at what Jesus said about these things...
Mat 6:22The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
Mat 6:23But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how greatisthat darkness!

So the true light seems different than the light the eye sees..

Jesus presented a literal interpetation of what we are in our essance...

Mat 5:14Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Mat 5:15Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Mat 5:16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

now remembering what God called night? and what governs the night? and what do paganists worship?

and here we see our LORD showing us how to get the Daylight inside of us.

the singleness of they eye... we humans have what is called binocular vision. meaning both eyes focus on the same target.

if i have one eye looking up and one looking sideways i will not only look strange, but i cant see anything at all now. as good as blind if i cant interpet the information my eyes see.

as Chrisians if we have one eye on the world and one eye on Him, we will start to get double vision.

so i partially agree with how i understand your opening post, but from the scriptural position of Genesis 1, Proverbs 8 and Jhon 1.

using those to interpet Christs saying, and how this literaly and symbolocaly aplies to everyone on this planet.

(Gen 37:9) And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
(Gen 37:10) And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

Here, the Sun is Abraham (Husband/Father)
The moon is Sarah (Wife/Mother)
The stars of Heaven are the children of Israel,
All bowing down to Jacob (Son of the Covenant, aka Israel, God's son)
All bow down to Jesus. Father, mother, and little children stars.
This has tremendous meaning.

But simply put, if we ask Jesus to raise up in us (resurrection) now today, and shine as the Sun and "Father" us into Sons of God (children of light), He does! :)
His Church Bride is as Sarah, and she is our mother. The Heavenly Jerusalem above, where we are in "Heavenly places". (Gal 4)
We are as Isaac, the children of promise. Sons of the "free woman" (moon)
We shine as lights Jesus says. That is because we are the children of the everlasting Abrahamic Covenant. We are Israel, the stars of Heaven :)

(Php 2:15) That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;

Fulfilling;

(Gen 26:4)
And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed (Jesus) shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

Fulfilled here;

(Gal 3:16)
Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

(Joh 8:12) Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

(Mat 5:14)Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Keep on shinin :)

as for weather these things represent forms of law, i coudl see it, however like an onion, there are many layers. my previous post i use a combination of literal and metaphorical approach, and the above post presente an anthropamophical approach with contectual support.

The only problem with the above post is he targets the wrong generation. it was Joseph that had that dream. i wrote alot about Jacob in my post the dew of heaven

where i use typology alot with Jacob Esau and Isaac. from the OP point of view, in law there is private and public. even today in north america you get public mail adressed to your person in all caps, and private is adressed in upper and lower case spelling.

when i see the all caps word LORD in scripture, i think of the national public name of God. when i see Lord, i see God in private. lemme explain...

for example, passover was the personal and 1 on 1 redemtion of each individual isrealite and yome kippor is the national redemprion of israel.

when the angel tod Jacob that he would be named Israel, that is God adressing Israel as a nation. when God refers to Jacob, he is talking to the entire coutry, simultaniouslly refering to the individual heart of the israelite from a 1 on 1 position. (God is omnipresent. he can do stuff like that. look in expdus when He revealed His covenant name as Jahovah Raphai. This healing took place at a national scale but was applied personaly as well meeting each inividual need as well as the common things we all need, like clothes.here is a sample verse of what i mean...

Num 23:21
He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath he seen perverseness in Israel: the LORD his God is with him, and the shout of a king is among them.

now baco to context... i will end with this verse...

Mal 4:2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.

and in closing i pose the question, could the sun represent Gods righteousness and the mon represent the law? for moses came down from the mount his face shone and faded like the moon, that cant shine at all without the sun, wich always burns.

his righteoussness endures forever just as His mercy endures forever
because to get at the law in the holy of holies, you have to actually push the mrecy seat out of the way.
thus God showing a distinction there...
and God comes down over the mercy seat. anyhow i can go on for pages and pages.

Sorry, I meant to say Joseph. If you just read 'Joseph' it will be complete.

If we go to the Sinatic Covenant, yes the moon did represent the law. The "law" was a Marriage contract between God and His Wife Israel. The lesser covenant.
I was demonstrating that Joseph's dream was of the higher order of Christ and His Wife and the children of God in the New Marriage Covenant in Christ's blood. Which is the Greater Covenant fulfilled, the Abrahamic Covenant.
In the Great New Marriage Covenant, We see Jesus' Wife with the Moon at Her feet (Rev 12). Indicating she has gotten the victory over the "law of sin and death moon marriage" of the old sinai law. But I suppose you were going to cover that, sorry if I rained on your parade :)

Hi Dana,
Very interesting. Honestly I don't see the connection between the "moon" and "stars" and the various ordinances you mention. Have you found any more texts that more explicitly connect them? Seems rather arbitrary to me. But I haven't looked into it at all. Thanks for sharing!

The connection between the laws and the heavenly bodies that we see in the sky is "light." Just as the Sun, moon and stars give us light and therefore understanding, so too do the laws of governance.

The first law is the law of nature which is where we as humans try to get whatever we want or need and will exchange whatever it takes for it. From the time of Adam and Eve leaving the garden of Eden and until the 12 tribes of Israel crossed into the promiced land they lived under the first most primitive law of nature. Jacob shows this type of law or agreement in Gen.28;20

"And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then will the Lord be my God."

So we see here the first basic and most primary law of this world. Following it we just make an "exchange" for what we want. Jacob(Israel) wanted food, clothing and sucsess and he said if he got it he would call God his God. Thats the first way people can live on this earth.

The second way is to cooperate for our mutual benifit. Before the 12 tribes crossed the Jordan they didn't know about or care about justice. But the laws of Moses forced them to follow "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth". Therfore their community prospered much more than the old way of life that they had lived before crossing Jordan. So this was a more advanced law. It is just as the moon's light is much more bright and advanced than the light of only the stars.

Then when Jesus Christ came he showed us an even more advanced type of law to live under. Jesus said that he came to fulfil the Law. What did this mean? It meant this.
The Old Testament Law of Moses had people following the law of justice(the moon) that was wittten and enforced from the outside. But Jesus fulfulled the prophesies of following that same law of justice but from within. Jer.31;31 Heb.8;10 So now Christians are to follow the law of justice that they feel and understand from within their hearts and minds. Not just follow a written down outward law. This inner law is called "conscience." The word conscience is not known at all in the Old Testament. But it is used exactly 31 times in the New Testament. It is the law of the Sun.

With Jesus's new second covenant the old law of justice is still basically followed but to it are added "compassion and mercy." This was his point. For this reason the most frequent offence that Jesus was accused of by the Old Testement following Pharasses was that he would show compassion and mercy by "healing people on the Sabbath." This and all actions and work were prohibited under the Old Testament Law. So we can see that Christianity, the Sun, is a much brighter light than the Old Testament Law of the moon.

Today, in this world the Islamic countries and the Jews still try to follow the Old Testament Law. That is why they use the symbol of the Moon. The Islamic laws called the Sharia are just the same laws from the Old Testament. Their founder Mohammad read the Bible and that is how he invented their religion. It's just the law of justice symbolized as the moon.

In Heb.10;1 it says "For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things,......"

Here we can see the similarity of the Sun and the Moon. The law(moon) is just a shadow of the Sun(good things to come) The moon doesnt' have it's own light to give. It just reflects the sun's light.

So too with "kind justice." The Old Testament's law of justice was not originated from itself but from inside someones heart and mind. They made up the law of justice by realizing it and then they wrote out it's ordinances.(Actually god taught them to do this.) But in this verse it shows the same principle of the sun and moon.
