I believe, and it is my understanding, though debatable, that the seven churches in Revelation were born in their ages..
Ephesus - Messianic - Beginning with the Apostle to the Circumcision, Peter
Smyrna - Martyr - Beginning with the Apostle to the Un-Circumcision, Paul
Pergamos - Orthodoxy formed in this time... Pergos is a tower... Needed in the dark ages
Thyatira - Catholicism formed in this time - The spirit of Jezebel is to control and to dominate.
Sardis - Protestantism formed in this time- A sardius is a gem - elegant yet hard and rigid
Philadelphia - Wesleyism formed in this time - To be sanctioned is to acquire it with love.
Laodicea - Charismatic movement formed in this time - Beginning with DL Moody, the first to make money off of ministry

The spirit of Jezebel is to control and to dominate, and it was unfortunately very common in Christianities mid ages. Jezebel was the wife to the old backslidden king Jeroboam. Her work against Israel was to take total control of state, afflict, persecute, and murder the people of God. Baal was now the state religion, and if you did not worship him you are now enemy of state and subject to execution. We find a good man who came to the rescue of a few of them,
"When Jezebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water." - 1 Kings 18:4
This was also true with Catholics and magisterial protestants of the mid ages. Who would not suffer any outside their narrow mindset and would persecute those who tried. This spirit has long left Christianity and it is my understanding that our issues are now Laodicean issues (he who reads into the prophecy understands). I believe that Christianity, including the Catholics and Protestants, have their own churches as enemies, as the lukewarmness, coldness, and apathy is now our greatest enemy and not each other. I would love to say that my Christian faith is without issues, but we have had our share in time.
It is my belief that the spirit of Jezebel is now in Islam, where many are being beheaded and terrorized on a daily basis. And we also have many who are forced to stay in Islam and not allowed to convert to something else. This is the spirit of Jezebel, to control and to dominate, at work and has its origins in the old Arch-Angel Lucifer, or the devil, who is a total control freak full of all arrogance and spiritual darkness. Nothing warm and loving here!

I must say, that groups such as the ISIS and al-Queda do the Islamic religion more harm than good as people much more readily submit to virtue rather than force. And with their evil activities darkness, arrogance, hate, control, domination, are now associated with Islam. I say they have done their religion more evil than good.
