And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.” . . . . . And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” Genesis 1:20-22

In the Garden of Eden, life would multiply but never overfill the space for it. This is possible if the space a life needed was built into every seed. The space for life would automatically grow as life increased and the world would never be overfilled with life.

Paradise has a number of characteristics suggesting it was not Earth. God walked there, for one.

I agree. God did not create life for any of it to be wasted. For example, the purpose of a seed is to create new life. When we use seed to make bread we are repurposing it and exploiting the parts of the seed we can use - we are giving the seed a new purpose while robbing it of its ability to be born and live. The universe is very big yet the place where life can florish is tiny. The universe is large enough for every seed (life) to have its own space. We Inherit many gifts when we are born but nothing is born with its own place to live- we all have to fight to carve out our own space. I don't think that was God's original plan.
