I just bought season 5 of the simpsons on DVD. And it has a really bad episode called "Homer and The Devil" Were homer sells his soul for a dounut.
It was a really bad episode with ned flanders as the devil, and it even had that bad devil start in it. Do you guys think I sould even own it since it has that really bad episode on it. Do you think it's ok to own something like and just avoid that episode.Or should I just get rid of that.

Can't give you the exact Bible reference for this, but St Paul said that if something might cause you to sin then don't touch it. If you feel that this episode is going to make you want to a doughnut badly enough to enter into satanic dealings then rid yourself of it immediately. I would be happy to help you in this. You can post the disc to me at......;)

On the other hand you could always just relax and enjoy the episode for what it is, which to me is making fun of devil worship and showing that, in the end, the power of love is greater than the power of evil.

It was never meant to be taken seriously. The very fact that good ol' Ned 'diddly' Flanders is the devil shows that. I mean, come on...

I was planning on getting the fifth season down the road, but now, this thread convinced me not to.

That's really very interesting to me. You're serious? The way I see it is pretty much how Andy up there sees it. It is not bad to own and watch unless owning will make you stray from God. I see sin ALL the time, well, not all the time, but in so many movies I watch and in some of that junk television i watch from time to time. I studied film in college so I can appreciate a well made production, a well told story. Now I review most of the movies I watch from a Christian perspective. I feel I am mature enough to separate sin from what else is there on screen. Even sin as "small" as a lie I can see automatically and know that is wrong. Does seeing someone lie make me tempted to? No. Does seeing someone commit adultery or murder make me want to? No. Any thoughts Satan ever tries to get into my head I kick right in the butt. That one episode of The Simpsons has what was mentioned but no one mentioned the other 485 sins that are committed that season. DO'H! How often does Homer lie? Bart lie? They all lie... except Ned "Diddly" Flanders. They steal and even there's sex outside marriage on the show! It's a show that has MANY bad things from a Biblical standpoint. Why's one episode worse than the rest?

If something is going to tempt you to sin, if something's going to lead you away from God and his word - then don't touch it. If you're mature enough to know what's bad and it won't harm you then there's no harm in enjoying what's funny within each Simpsons episode even the one mentioned above!

Merry Christmas, and may God Bless your Simpsons viewing!
Chris

I'm sorry, but lets at least be consistent about this. If you are going to cite your Christian faith as a reason for not watching this episode or even the full series, then thats fine. However, if you are going to be consistant then you must not stop there. The Simpsons must be branded as totally contrary to EVERYTHING that we, as Christians, believe in. Why ? I'll tell you.

If the programme is to be taken seriously, as some in this thread would seek to do, then Th Simpsons supports and encourages drunkeness, gambling addiction, child abuse, unfaithfulness, cruelty to animals, drink driving, gluttony, envy, theft, worshipping false gods, and that's just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

It is also mildly anti semetic, pokes fun at people of lower intelligence, racially stereotypes all other nations and peoples, and puts forward the notion that being a layabout and acting irresponsibly will lead to success.

Not only shouls all Christians immediately refuse to watch another episode, there should also be mass protests outside the Fox Studios to try and stop the programme from being made.

Personally, I have one word to offer those who may feel a little uneasy about a certain episode. That word is Satire.

Took the words out of my mouth!

To the OP - The Simpsons is comedy - meant to be ridiculous and NEVER taken seriously! I thought that was one of the funniest episodes ever. It wasn't even to be taken seriously in light of the usual storylines - it was a Halloween episode, alternate universe, correct?

I understand if you don't want to watch anything that challenges your faith, but don't forget that with Jesus on your side, you don't have to be afraid of anything, least of all a comedy cartoon! Don't watch it anymore, by all means, but really don't see why you shouldn't relax and enjoy other episodes for what they are.

Too many Christians try to live in isolation.....
That's the truth. I don't feel that's right at all... unless they're perfectly content living in isolation and they do so their whole life but how far can you go? Stay on a farm somewhere and never leave, no tv, no news, nothing from the outside world? Some do it. How many? Tiny few. Those who try would be missing a LOT of great stuff out here like The Simpsons!

This is probably a topic for another forum, but how are you going to have a positive influence on people if you withdraw? That's a problem I have with home and private schooling.....you gotta let your kid learn how to cope in a rough society, plus Christians are always talking about being missionaries....what about the public schools? We need some good kids too for role models.......ok, end of soapbox....bottom line, you can't hide from evil if you want to test your faith....

I can understand avoiding movies and television show due to nudity, sexual content, vulgar language, and violence. But to avoid it because of a 7.5 minute satiracle sketch on the devil and temptation makes me scratch my head as to why. If you're going to boycott that season, you may as well boycott the rest of them because I can guarantee there are good-humored stabs at moral issues and organized religions in every season.

"Once something has been approved by the government, it's no longer immoral!" ~Rev. Lovejoy, The Simpsons

Folks, The Simpsons is a comedy; nothing in it should be taken as seriously as some are doing. It pokes fun at everything and everyone.
Lighten up and enjoy it. Worst could (and has) been done.
Ya know what, we've already covered that... but thank you for reiterating, it doesn't hurt :) Only time The Simpsons could hurt is if people start imitating the show... which would be insane, it's a cartoon! To be honest, i don't know if i'd let my kids watch, if i had kids, but any mature adult surely can know that IT'S NOT REAL!!!! Take a look at all the violence in Looney Tunes! How often does Elmer Fudd get shot? Plenty o' times... just a cartoon!
