This has been puzzling me for a while so hopefully someone can enlighten me! If Christ was buried on the Friday night and rose on the Sunday morning how then does that make it 3 days and 3 nights as stated in Matthew?

Matthew 12:40
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

This was explained very well in an earlier thread. I will try to look for it.

The answer had to do with what they considered a day; Something like as long as it was still light out it was consider day and the samething in the morning. Unless I messed up the whole principle. Let me go look for the thread.

I saw an old calendar from this time period: He was crucified on a Wednesday, which was the eve of the Passover; Thursday was Passover: a prescribed feast day with rest for the women who were going to embalm Him, night 1/day 1;

Friday was next, Sabbath eve, with the women too busy to embalm Him in their prep for their families & them to be able tpo rest on the Saturday Sabbath, night 2/day 2

Saturday was the Sabbath, no one went near the tomb as it was a day of rest: night 3/ day 3

Sunday, the new Sabbath, resurrection, etc, the end.

Good Friday should actually be Good Wednesday.

OK, the other point of view is that "three days and three nights" is another way of saying "on the third day". Kind of like the situation where what is called the first floor of a building in the US, is called the second floor in Australia. (Don't know what it's called in Scootland.)

That allows Jesus to still be crucified on Friday. (Friday was the first day, Saturday the second, and Sunday the third.) Yes, I know, that's only 2 nights - but the phrase could quite easily be a figure of speech.
