I was wondering. Sometimes I have a hard time figuring out when things are to be taken literally or as a symbol. Which got me thinking about something. The serpent that is in the garden of eden. He is refer to as the "great deceiver" or "devil, or Satan". When the serpent speaks to Eve in the garden how did the serpent look to Eve? Did the devil show himself as a serpent (snake) or as himself?

thanks,
newbeliever

Gen 3:14
And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

Eve would have probably seen him as a surpent rather than as himself. The bilble makes this clear. Should we take this literal? I choose to.

Why not? doesn't it seem strange that Eve wasn't surprised that a serpent could and did communicate with her?
Probably both Adam and Eve could communicate with all the animals before the fall.

Thank you for your replies. I wasn't sure and never really thought it was possible that Adam and Eve could speak to the animals. Things were different before sin was introduced to the world, so it could be possible :)
