The best message ever given regarding Christian discipleship was by our Lord himself in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:3-7:27).

If anyone is interested, this is my favorite book expounding Jesus' great sermon. It keeps Jesus' words as profound and revolutionary as they were meant to be, yet it gives helpful background that makes the sermon very real and intensely personal:

I'm reading Studies of the Sermon on the Mount ~ D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. Another amazing book. I love that topic.

I myself have found Bonhoeffer difficult to get into; but the Sermon on the Mount and Matthew's Gospel generally are very searching.

A real character, older guy in my church who was very young in Berlin in 1944, 45, but remembers the air raid sirens and searchlights in the sky, allied bombers and going into shelters -- he decided I needed to see this book and brought his copy to church and gave it to me, though I didn't even ask. I've only read a chapter, but now I'm curious because you've connected it to the Sermon on the Mount.

Chapter 6 of this book is devoted to the Sermon on the Mount. In my copy, that comes to about 85 pages of discussion, and I have been impressed with Bonhoeffer’s writings in general, and this chapter in specifics.
