And the question is:

"Given your supposition that utility (specifically preservation) is that which drives evolution, how is it that man's higher-developed functions (specifically the intellect) are responsible for sexual dysfunction (inability to [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]) in the male?"

is this an other type of "what evolved first, sex or desire??"-question? and why is this thread called "an other question they can't awnser" if your first thread allready is awnsered multiple times (beauty is not absolute)? And what would your explaination be?let me geuss,"the fall" did it?

please don't post your medical problems on this forum, I just don't want to know, really.

what is your question? It makes no sense to me..... you make the assertation that man's higher fuctions result in decreased ability to [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]... where did you get that from?

I'm guessing he's talking about sexual disfunction with psychological causes.

Man's higher functions (intellect) have more than one effect.

If in general, the positive effects of intellect (discovering fire, learning how to fight of sabre-toothed tigers, harnessing electricity, arguing against creationists) outweigh the negative (killing each other with technological weaponry, [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] problems, Big Brother on the telly), then the intellect will still represent a selection advantage.

There is no problem.

I figured that is probably what it was, but seeing as this sexual disfunction does not really affect most of the population it doesn't really matter.

precisely. Of all the people I know, approximately 0 have sexual function problems (or at least they aren't telling me, heh) This is the same with any feature. there are cost-benefit ratios. For example in certain species of shoal grouping fish, some daring males might swim out to investigate a shadow to see if it is a predator. This is a massive risk (downside) for them, since if they get caught, then they die. however if they don't get caught, they get extra time with the ladies. the extra women that the fish with these genes (on average) get outweighs the fish lost, so the genes spred through the population. Same for the human brain. The selective advantage of higher intellect is such that, for whatever reason, those with greater intelligence bred more, though there may have been a downside that some were more likely to get depressed and not breed. However the number getting extra mates outnumbered those who did not get any, and so the genes for intellect spread.

all fundamental stuff which colossians could pick up quite quickly if he actually bothered to learn about evolution.

Were I to guess, I'd say that it is because male human tendancies lead to sexual stimulation in the abstract. Man sees a picture of a naked female and he becomes aroused, he sees a woman on the street and he becomes aroused, in fact, being both human and male, he sees linoleum and he becomes aroused. :p

The arousal isn't based on any real physical interaction, but on a mental one. Humans, having reached a point wherethey are capable of distinguishing themselves from their surroundings, are removed from their surroundings, the interactions that, among other species, are based on a physical attribute, (pheromones, seem to be popular) take place, entirely, inside the mind of the male human. If that mind is damaged, in some way, or malfunctioning, then that connection can be circumvented.

As for the reason for it evolving that way? Well the ability to seperate ourselves from the rest of the universe is part of what gives the illusion of awareness. This seems to be a side effect of the human brains operation, this has, in itself, aided our survival, (since we're not exactly physically superior to the rest of the creatures on this planet) allowing us to suceed as a species. The disadvantage of this human survival technique is, however, that higher levels of complexity in the brain may lead to other disadvantages and possibly a greater chance of a malfunction. This hasn't, however, proved to be a trait that reduced our survivability as a species. (though it may harm the individual, evolution doesn't care about individuals, only populations).

Does that work? Since it isn't really my field, I could be way off, but I suspect you're not actually looking for an answer, given the title of the thread. But, since I am an evolutionist, and I have answered the question, (even if that answer does not satisfy you) would it be fair to say the thread is mistitled?

Perhaps, "Another question the Evolutionists can't answer to my satisfaction."

There is no problem.

There is a problem: your logic.
You purport to improve the whole at the expense of a part of it, but the part is itself a smaller whole. Recursive.

What the hell are you talking about? Reproduction and selection takes places at the level of the whole organism, not any individual part of it. You're blathering because you know you're sunk. It's like arguing that if I give you a tenner and take a fiver you can't be richer because you have fewer fivers.
